Dear Alan My 5g-grandparents were Samuel DEWSE and Judith (ELLIS) who married in Dewsbury on 11 Feb 1761 according to the IGI (extracted from parish register.) My descent is from their daughter Judith who married James SMITH. Does that ring any bells? The only information I have on Samuel and Judith (snr) is from their marriage, the baptisms of their children, and a 'possible' for Samuel's own baptism in Dewsbury in February 1745, the son of Richard. If that is the correct one, and if it was an infant baptism, it would mean Samuel was 16 at marriage, which of course is quite possible. Samuel and Judith had 6 children in the 11 years after their marriage, then I cannot trace any more. If they were in their teens when they married this seems unlikely unless one of them died, but again I haven't been able to trace that. The other possibilities are that Samuel was not an infant when he was baptised, or that the one in 1745 is the wrong one. Althought the marriages are Dewsbury, the baptisms are Ossett, so I suspect that is where they lived. No doubt somebody will correct me if I'm mistaken but Ossett seems to have had its own baptism registers back to 1746 but not its own marriage registers until much later. I have a fair bit more information on Judith (DEWSE) SMITH and succeeding generations if you are interested.
