Hi, I'm not sure if I understand your mystery. Could you possibly just reword the gist of it for me so I know I've 'got it'? How do you know the Joshua Batty in the Wakefield prison is the correct Joshua Batty? There are several born about the same time showing up in the census records. Did you get a father's name from the marriage certificate. Are you thinking that the Shepherd family changed their name unofficially or that there was a typographical error or that someone was hiding a crime or just 'adopted' children so they didn't find out about 'dad'.??
