    3. David I have the "My ancestors were Quakers" the definite guide to Quakers as registered by the Society of Genealogists in London. Under Births it states Children, both of whose parents were in membership at the time of birth, had until 1959 a right to membership. Other minors may be admitted as minors at the request of parents. Since friends maintained an testimony against water baptism, no record is expected to be in parish registers, though occasionally incumbents felt it a civic duty to record all births in the parish*. During certain periods, particularly 1776-1837., non member children who had some claim to be under the care of Friends, are entered in the registers distinguished by NM. In general, this tended to be where one parent only was in membership: in some cases however NM was entered where neither parent appears to be in membership - perhaps because oner parent had been disowned for marriage, before the priest to a non-friend" My interpretation is that it is highly unlikely that a child who is baptized - as in this instance in a parish church in Thorpe - would be related to a Quaker - at the time of the birth. There are of course adult baptisms, so it is possible that the above person was originally a Quaker, but then decided to leave the Quakers, and become a member of the Church of England, Methodist etc Richard * I think that this was a common practice as I found most of the births of my Quaker ancestors in the 18th century recorded in the IGI "registers" - needless to say there was no mention of baptism -----Original Message----- From: west-riding-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:west-riding-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of David Marriott Sent: 22 December 2007 17:24 To: west-riding@rootsweb.com Subject: [WRY] Quakers It should be said that although Quakers did / do not baptise their children, they are usually quite flexible about such things. Later marriage in an Anglican church would not necessarily mean that the person was not a Quaker, but just that they may have married an Anglican.
