    3. Thank you, Terry, I was unaware of the FEEFHS. I will check that out. My family that went to St. Petersburg kept their Brit. citizenship but they did travel lots. In her letters when she was an old lady Sarah talks about going to southern Germany during the cold winters. They would also possibly be listed there because Sarah's second husband (James Thronton) started a business after they were married called the Thornton Woolen Mill. I will check that site out. And you are right, I do not know how to read Russian. I had completely forgotten about Anna and the King of Siam. Thanks again, DeAnne On 11/28/07, TERRY HOPKIN- SUNDBY <terrysundbya0felan3@hotmail.com> wrote: > > > Hi > you may find them in the St Petersberg records. everyone inthe then Russian capital was registered. Dont forget at that time ordinary Russians needed an internal passport to travel, and foriegners were equaly controlled if not so obviously. A source that might be useful is FEEFHS; Federation of Eastern European Family History Societies at http://feefhs.org whilst mainly for those who have families in Eastern Europe they may well have folk who can perhaps help you as I doudt you read Russian or know where to start > AS TO SINGEL WOMEN TRAVELING ALONE AT THAT TIME NEVER FORGET ANNA AND THE KING IS A TRUE STORY!! > regards > Terry > Norway >

    3. It was surprisingly common for "single women of means" to travel on their own in the 19th century. This was despite the stiff social views of the day. (Sorry Paris and Brittany- you weren't the first women to make headlines for all the wrong reasons) Actress/author/Russian expert Helen Rappaport has written a number of books about women who travelled in the 19th century Her book "No Place for Ladies - The Untold Story of Women in the Crimean War. " is a best seller. She's very nice and studied Russian in Leeds. If you need "expert" research on 19th century Russia she may be able to help. www.helenrappaport.com Nelson

    3. Hi there is a bond between Yorkshire and Russia going way back to Elizabethan times. Fishing boats from Hull were taken and held in Vardø fort in Norway by King Christian IV's navy as revenge for the Muskovy Company's boats refusing to pay a transit fee whilst sailing along the coast of Norway to Archangel and Murmanski. The trade language Russio-Norwegian used in the Pomor region of Norway/ Russia shows a few English inclusions; the word for sleep (slipy) to mention but one. (the universities in Tromsø and Archangel have plenty of details on their websites) During the Industrial Revolution it was not unknown for well trained factory artificers/ hands to do a bunk with their knowledge to greener fields including Russia to help these countries with their industrilization. ( one only has to look at the awfully English name a major French industrial concern has to see at least one person who had got out of Britain. So it may well not be furs your ancestor was involved in perhaps early industrial mill work, especially as he was from the West Riding, worth anyone who has workers involved in industry to look in foriegn fields regards Terry Norway > From: ndenton@cogeco.ca > To: west-riding@rootsweb.com > Date: Mon, 3 Dec 2007 13:33:57 -0500 > Subject: Re: [WRY] Wilkinson Research > > It was surprisingly common for "single women of means" to travel on their > own in the 19th century. > This was despite the stiff social views of the day.
