    3. Hi again, Alan I have a problem with my HINCHLIFFE's prior to 1812. My direct ancestor was Mary Ann HINCHLIFFE born 1812 in Upperthong (from 3 censuses) or Greave (1 census). Unfortunately there's a strong chance she was illegit. On her marriage certif (1838, Almondbury) to my g-g grandfather, Charles WRIGHT, she gives no father. However, I have found that there is a widow, Elizabeth HINCHLIFF, living in Greave (a very small hamlet) in the 1841 census. And so it's possible that my Mary Ann (incorrectly) left her father off the marriage certif because he was dead. I have been wracking my brains as to how I can sort this out, but all the obvious lines of attack (LDS film records etc) have come to nothing. Cheers Alan

    3. Hi Alan, I see your problem. According to my listings, on the 1841 C., there are three H. families, but they only have Elizabeths at ages 6 or 45, and no Mary Anns. In Upperthong, there are 28 H. families, and Mary Ann is with this gang: Wright 8 Appleyard 10 Jonathan 12 Joseph 14 Mary Ann 15 Joshua 17 Woollen weaver apprentice Elizabeth 40 George 40 Clothier ??
