Sent: Thursday, November 01, 2007 3:28 PM Subject: HAIGH I am researching the family of Elizabeth HAIGH who was born 10.10.1797 the daughter of John HAIGH and Elizabeth HAIGH (nee TEMPEST). She married Rev. James ARCHBELL in St Peter's in Leeds on 25.10.1818 and they came out to South Africa in 1819. Her obituary describes the family as staunch Wesleyans/Methodists and says that she had at least 6 brothers and sisters one of whom may have been called Robert. Her father is said by their descendants to have been a Minister in the Church. After her death James married Sarah Anne STRICKLAND (nee HAIGH) who was probably her cousin although some sources suggest sister. I have traced Sarah Anne in the 1851 census when she was widowed and living with Jabez HAIGH who is described as her brother. There are records of Jabez and his family and his parents are William and Judith HAIGH so he is not Elizabeth's brother. An old family letter says that TEMPEST family were from Marton in Cravon and "...the Tempests of Brasfield Hall that was blown up in the rebellion" and the grandparents surname was EDMONDSON from Barnoldswick in Lancashire. Can anyone help me to find the elusive Rev John and his wife Elizabeth HAIGH or any other of their family as I really have hit a brick wall here. Thanks and best wishes Eve
