My brick wall seems to be building itself ever higher. In my efforts to find the parentage of Selina MALLINSON my ggggmother, born Wakefield 1831, and which is not clarified by her marriage certificate because there is no trace of the father she names as John, I have found the following: 1. 1841 and onwards census returns for the Wakefield Mallinson family. There's only one such family, so I know it has to be right. 2. identified from these census returns 4 siblings, all reported born Wakefield. Neither Selina nor any of her siblings seem to have a record in the IGI, under any Wakefield batch number nor under those for Hook, Howden (or Goole for luck) which is where her mother was from: only one brother was born after 1837 and I've ordered his birth certificate. But the others are all a mystery. 3. Selina's sister Lucy MALLINSON married the local blacksmith, William BENNETT, a widower. She was single and living with her mother in 1861, and in 1871 shows children born from 1862 onwards, when William is also living in the Mallinson household. I say he was local because both families lived on Westgate in the centre of Wakefield. I can't find any marriage for these two individuals (separately) in a Wakefield district, and I've checked the images of the registers online, not just transcripts. Another mystery. I am seriously beginning to think Selina's mother Jane never married and bore all her children under her maiden name. Would this have been a barrier to getting them baptised? or to getting formally married? What am I missing or doing wrong? Is there a publication of the Wakefield registers? I should just add a story: there's someone else finding the same brick wall, and coincidentally we both posted on Curious Fox in the same week. It turns out he's a third cousin previously unknown. So sometimes brick walls are good for you .. Maggie
