Hi Carolyn, Being a BATTY research myself I thought I might be able to spot Joshua in my tree for Sheffield. I haven't found him. This is what I have found so far....... If they were in the Sheffield area during the 1861 census I can not see them showing up on the SDFHS index or on Ancestry. Have you been able to spot them? I have however found this on the IGI. JOSHUA BATTY - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 08 JUN 1829 Penistone, Yorkshire, England His parents are James Batty & Sarah Brown. Penistone is just a little up the Valley from Sheffield not far from Barnsley. Wortley is the registration district that covers..... Bradfield; Cawthorne; Ecclesfield; High Hoyland; Penistone; Wortley Maybe a look around the Penistone Parish Records would be helpful. There is a 20 year old Joshua in Wakefield Prison on the 1851 census. It states he came from Barnsley. Elaine in Ottawa. Hi, Elaine, Lovely to receive your message. Thanks! Yes, that is 'my' Joshua, son of James BATTY and Sarah BROWN. I , too, suspect that the prisoner in Wakefield in 1851 is he. Witnesses on his MC to Charlotte SHEPHERD were William BATTY and Martha BARRACLOUGH (whom I think married George BARRACLOUGH) and was his sister, as was William his brother. Sorry, I should have been more explicit, but I didn't want to make my 1st posting too long. Joshua and Charlotte and 2 little daughters came to N.S.W. via Melbourne on the "Northern Bride" as assisted immigrants, together with Joshua's brother Amos, sister Sarah and William. I have been going 'batty' with this bunch, but will explain later. Looking forward to hearing from you again. Best wishes, Carolyn in Bathurst. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Elaine Pickard" <trayford@rogers.com> To: <west-riding@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 20, 2007 4:10 PM Subject: Re: [WRY] New Lister: re BATTY and SHEPHERD(sic) > Hi Carolyn, > > Being a BATTY research myself I thought I might be able to spot Joshua in > my > tree for Sheffield. Hi, again, Elaine, I must be truly nuts! Still forgot to say why you couldn't find them in the 1861 C. They arrived in Melbourne in Jun, 1858. Of course we have no Census here. However, I'm still trying to find out more about Joshua and have emailed a couple of people in the GRD, 2007: only this morning, though. All the best, Carolyn.
