Hello, I have a church baptismal entry for the Parish of Addingham for a member of my THORNTON family. Baptised 5 July 1807 Hannah, daughter of Abednego THORNTON of Mitholme Royd in the Parish of Halifax, Wool-stapler by Sarah daughter of - CHILD of Skelmanthorpe Parish. Farmer. Born September 19th 1806. I am wondering about the wording of this entry. Is Mitholme Royd some way from Addingham and in giving mention of Sarah's father's parish, is the church ensuring that any parish relief would be required from Skelmanthorpe rather than Addingham? Sarah Child married Abednego THORNTON in 1774 near Skelmanthorpe. Her father was John Child. Abednego and Sarah already had 8 living children in 1807 although I know many had already left home by this 1807 date. At least 6 of the children were born near Skelmanthorpe. Am I correct in that no mention is made of Abednego's parish of origin but only his place of work? Two of their other children were born in Halifax in 1790 and 1792. Hoping for some insight to this family entry. Regards, Jenny
Hi It isn't a family thing it is the style of the register adopted in the parish of Addingham at the time, known as a Dade register. This entry is quite tame compared with some and they give great genealogical information. This example (below) is from Badsworth 1804 George Baram son of John of Upton a Labourer - s of Thomas of Upton a Labourer by Elizabeth d of Roger Holt of North Elmsall a Labourer and his wife Elizabeth d of George Marshall of South Kirkby a Labourer by Sarah d of Joseph Wormald of Crofton a Coal Miner born 15 Oct 1804 Bpt 11 Nov 1804. An article on the origins of this style of entry can be found http://www.pontefractfhs.org.uk/ under Articles, which also includes a list of parishes where this style of register can be found. Dade registers were named for the Rev William Dade, a Yorkshire vicar who was far-sighted and saw that even ordinary people might one day want to trace their ancestry, so he instituted a system of entering substantially more information than we normally get, and it spread to many parishes in Yorkshire and adjoining counties. When you see a Dade register you should give thanks to the Rev Dade, for you have struck gold! Dade entries ran from around the mid-1770s to 1812 when a new system came in which, ironically gave less information. "Mitholme Royd" is normally spelt MYTHOLMROYD and is indeed some way from Addingham. It lies between Halifax and Hebden Bridge in the Calder Valley and I lived there for about 10 years in the 1950s. -- Roy Stockdill Guild of One-Name Studies: www.one-name.org Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." Jenny, My Gx5 grandmother is a THORNTON. Hannah THORNTON born c1765 in Kirkheaton became the second wife of my Gx4 grandfather. Have no further info. Hannah died c1791 and her sister then wed my Gx4 grandfather. It's a stretch but there might be a tenuous connection.
