Dear List I am trying to find out why my MARKEY ancestor's moved from Gloucestershire to Bradford in the 1870's. Was there a scheme to entice southern agricultural workers to the Industrial North? If so, can anyone point me in the right direction to find out more? Or can anyone offer a further suggestion? Many thanks Della in Melbourne
Hi Della Mine moved from rural Dorset to Lancashire and I presume it was for work in the growing textile industries in the north of the country. Hi Della At 14:08 11/07/2007, you wrote: >I am trying to find out why my MARKEY ancestor's moved from Gloucestershire >to Bradford in the 1870's. I know that my wife's ancestors moved from Brailes (just outside Glos) to Pinxton (industrial Derbyshire) for work - still at that stage in agriculture - their offspring went into the mines. With the expansion of railways, getting to places where there was more work was much easier. Don't forget too that both areas (Glos and Bradford) shared expertise in wool. So it may be they just took a chance - but perhaps they saw an advert, or someone went to their locality to recruit. I don't know exactly how my "in-laws" were aware of their job opportunity. HTH Andy.
