Hi, I subsscribe to Ancestry.com and have recently tried to find my Broadhead ancestors in and around Ossett in 1841. Playing around with the index revealed no Broadheads nor weird alternatives. I therefore decided to trawl through all 12 Enumeration Districts on RG 1268, covering Ossett to examine the actual entries to see if the indexers had misinterpreted. All went well until ED6 produced just the header sheet; then ED7 was OK but after that ED8 to ED12 also only had the header sheet. Is this an unusual occurence and can anybody help me out with the missing EDs? If not a visit to the nearest record office beckons. Thanks, David Drake
I did an open search for BROADHEAD on the 1841 at http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk and it resulted in 300+ entries in Yorkshire. I have also reported errors to Ancestry in the past - some are fixed, some not. Good luck! David I discovered three pages from an Enumeration District in Kent missing on ancestry a few months ago, reported it to them via their email link, and lo and behold, about a fortnight later I had an email confirming that the pages / links had been corrected, and there they were - none of my ancestors though!!!!!! I think that this problem related to dodgy links, but the the odd ED may have been missed altogether...... Perhaps try findmypast if they have the 1841 Census? However you are lucky (if you can get to Wakefield) - Ossett is one of the few places to have useful information surviving from the 1821 census - yes, I checked my typing, 1821! There's an index in the Balne Road Library in Wakefield in the reference section (top floor far end - on the left on the shelves oppposite where the staff are) - well that's where it was 2 years ago. As well as an index, it gives households - names and ages of adults, but children are indicated only as m/f and age is rounded UP to 5, 10 etc. It is a transcript - usual cation applies - my Hetheringtons were Etherington! But it solved a mystery for me. HTH Andy.
David, You say you've tried other variants of BROADHEAD, I've found a couple mis-transcribed as ROADRUCK before, just thought I'd let you know as its not an obvious variant.
