Hi Roy, Thank you for your e-mail.. All my research into the Leack family was done quite a number of years ago - in the dark ages - before computers and have to admit I haven't looked at it for quite some time. A visit to the Lancaster Family History group a couple of weeks ago to hear a talk by a Professor from Lancaster University about the Inns, Taverns etc. of Lancaster re-ignited my interest. Richard LEACK was the landlord of the White |Lion in Leonardgate from about 1810 until 1828. I only have him on one census entry - the 1851 - living with a married daughter Elizabeth MUSGROVE in Leonardgate. He's a widower aged 69 born in Clapham Yks. I wasn't able to find the family on the 1841 census lots of it was illegible. It wouldn't have given me his exact age and where he was born, other than "Out of County" would it? I haven't seen the marriage entry personally it came via a third party - I think a visit to the Record Office in Preston is called for! I have found a number of baptisms and marriages for LEECH in Clapham and Long Preston on www.familysearch.org I have found a marriage of a Richard LEECH to a Hannah MACKRETH 17 November 1783 at Clapham but no baptisms related to them. I am wondering whether they may have moved over the Pennines after their marriage. Would you know if there is a web-site for the IGI batch numbers? Presumably they must, otherwise can you be sure you have the right man? The IGI has a Richard Leak baptised at Bentham (High and Low Bentham are fairly close to Clapham) on 29 Mar 1778, son of John and Mary Leak, and another Richard Leak baptised at Giggleswick (again, not that far away) on 17 Mar 1782, son of Margaret Leak, no father given so presumably illegitimate. You cannot rely too much on ages in the early censuses, especially of people born that long before civil registration came in in 1837. Very often they didn't know exactly how old they were of where they'd been born! -- Roy Stockdill Genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about."
