Hi everyone I was looking for some clarification regarding to the event called "The Waste" in Yorkshire after the Norman Conquest. On another list there is quite some debate about the TOTAL eradication of the population ( Which I find hard to believe) , and it replacement by people from surrounding areas. Can anyone shed some light on this, as I am keenly interested, as my family has been in West Yorkshire since around the conquest, and possibly before. My DNA results indicate we are neither Norman or Norse, but rather pre Celtic, so I am wondering if we survived the waste or wandered in from somewhere soon afterwards? Any comments would be appreciated. Steve
Well, I know something about it, but I don't believe it was instantaneous. It was several events that I think actually happened some time after the Norman conquest. Hello Steve Haven't heard of The Waste.I have a very early family tree of my namesake MIRFIELD living in the village of Mirfield which goes back to the time of the conquest and like yours possibly before, the earliest one was prior to 1180 and his name was RAVENSKILL(or RANKELLUS) and was a Dane.My hope one day is that I can connect to them.
