After 15 years of genealogical research from right here at my computer, I am finally going to Yorkshire in May to visit the places that I have only seen as names on censuses and certificates. I would be most grateful for any tips or recommendations from those of you who have been there or live there regarding accommodation and transportation or any must sees in terms of research facilities for the locations that are of interest to me. My grandfather Edwin POUNDER was born in Altofts in 1890, his father Mark was born in Beverley, ERY 1857 but moved to Wakefield in his teens and worked on the railway, eventually as a driver. His father also Mark, was born 1813 in Leon, Spain (presumably the son of a soldier in the Peninsular War) returned to Beeston at about the age of 2 and then went on to become a jail guard at the Beverley House of Correction. I hope to visit the Railway Museum at York to learn more more about the life as a railway worker. Can anyone suggest a museum that has a good demonstration of life as a jail keeper and a possible approach to learn more about Peter Pounder the Peninsular War soldier. Thanking you in advance from a very happy, soon to be Yorkshire tourist Sandra Ontario, Canada
Hi Sandra I hope your visit to Yorkshire is a pleasant one. As for museums I believe there is one in Ripon that devotes itself to prisons and may well be worth a visit. The railway museum in York is also very interesting and the Castle museum well worth a visit. My wife and I live in Thirsk not far from York and Ripon and would be pleased to offer and assistance to you visiting those sites Stewart
