Was Ben Rhydding a village or settlement in 1857 or was the Hydro establishment really the only thing there. I have just found in the Glasgow Herald for Oct 1857 the notice of my relative's death "suddenly at Ben Rhydding near Otley, Yorkshire -----". I am wondering if he was there on business, passing through, staying with friends etc or taking the waters and am trying to get a picture of what Ben Rhydding may have been like in 1857. His death is not on the Scottish or English death indexes although his will states that he died in Glasgow. In light of my recent find in the Glasgow Herald he died in Ben Rhydding. It runs in my memory that Ben is what they call mountains in scotland. It may be the name of a farmhouse. I learn more about the geography of Britain from a combination of genealogy and watch "escape to the country", property ladder, and location, location" on my pay TV.
