Hi Liane, I think your marriage witness maybe Thomas Hebblewait. At least one can be found in Huddersfield in 1841 - I have seen an 'H' like the one displayed on the register Remember spellings are somewhat creative at this period in time even without concidering a given persons ability to read/write - even his onwn name. Corruptions could be Hebblewaite, Hebblethwait(e), or perhaps Hebblewhite - amongst others. Cheers, Robyn
Hi, I think Robyn makes a good point and one has to remember the accent and dialect. If the person writing wasn't a native born Yorkshire person it makes a difference, I remember we happily dropped all sorts of letters in pronunciation, one I can remember was Slaithwaite which we called slouwit so you can't blame anyone for problems in spelling. We also dropped letters and added the first letter to the next word. (can't think of one at the moment) and I didn't realise thou and thee was really was a very old way of saying you H was seldom sounded either. Now I come to think of it we had a really vibrant local language which education and TV have removed really. In the late 40s and 50s at school we were taught the Yorkshire dialect was uneducated and that dropping vowels etc wasn't good either, we had to speak BBC English if we wanted to get on in life. My accent is strong enough for people here to actually like it but my dialect has virtually disappeared - no one would understand me. I found it amusing when years later I studied English for my Dip T in australia to discover they pointed us to a book detailing the rich language interaction used in Leeds!!!! Jean in S. Australia. -----Original Message----- From: cable@iinet.net.au Sent: Wednesday, August 17, 2011 3:22 PM To: west-riding@rootsweb.com Subject: [WRY] West Yorkshire Marriages and Banns on Ancestry Hi Liane, I think your marriage witness maybe Thomas Hebblewait.
