I am visiting West Riding soon and would be grateful for any guidance on which record centre is best to find the baptisms for births in Clayton, or possibly more specifically, Dolphin and which churches to research. My 2nd great grandmother Mary Robinson married Alfred Boyes in 1857 and her father was not recorded on the marriage record or certificate. In 1841 aged 10 she is a 'lodger' at the home of John Shaw and his wife Nancy (nee Robinson) who is aged 30. Also lodging there are Hannah Robinson aged 15 and Samuel Robinson aged 12. In 1851 Mary is a 'lodger' with Hannah who is then married to Joseph Houldsworth. Hannah's marriage certificate states her father was Samuel Robinson, a collier. Subsequent censuses show Mary was born in Clayton, and 1861 states Dolphin. It seems to me that my only hope of getting any further is to find the baptisms of Mary, Samuel, Hannah and Nancy to find out how they are related. Thank you in advance for any advice or help on how to solve this mystery, Jenny Parker
To see parish records you are best going to Bradford Central Library where they have them on microfiche - the originals are held by the archives service but they don't get them out unless mircofiche is completely unreadable. Local studies have just moved to 3rd floor of the library and staff are very helpful - they have a card catalogue of names, photos, soldiers, subjects as well as microfiche of old newspapers which might be useful for looking at BMD notices. wakefield holds the deeds, court records and some hospital information but most Bradford information is held at the Bradford Branch of the archives service. They have a very useful online catalogue that would be worth looking at before your visit in case there are any documents that you need to order. I'm there most Thursdays beavering away :0) Hope this helps Kathryn Dr Kathryn Hughes WestYorkshireLives.co.uk > Date: Wed, 12 Oct 2011 16:15:16 +0100 > From: ij@iandjparker.f9.co.uk > To: WEST-RIDING-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [WRY] Bradford Records > > > I am visiting West Riding soon and would be grateful for any guidance on which record centre is best to find the baptisms for births in Clayton, or possibly more specifically, Dolphin and which churches to research.
