Hi Gordon There some Collins's that I think lived at Thurgo land. If it is the same family that my sister married into. This branch of Collins were at Thorne in the early 1800's and were in the Barnsley area later, then moved to Denaby. Hi Sharlie, Many thanks for this. I haven't come across the variant of JEBB yet but you never know. Spellings obviously varied tremendously up to the middle of the 19th century. My JUBBs were in Thurgoland (near Penistone/Sheffield) in the middle of the 18th century and gradually moved up the valley to Huddersfield. I'd be delighted to share any information. If you could pass this on to your ex daughter in law I should be very grateful. Hi, I'm trying to do a little research on the textile company of Crowther and Vickerman, who were based at Crosland Moor, Huddersfield. I'm particularly interested in the VICKERMAN side - who was involved in the company, etc but all/any information would be useful. I've checked West Yorkshire Archives and they only have 2 mentions of the company - 1 from Dyers & Bleachers Union and 1 re marketing in Germany. Google only comes up with 1 viable hit about someone who worked there. Any information would be gratefully received. Hi Ian Rastrick would have come under Halifax registration district. The March quarter for 1844 in D.ewsbury has a birth for an Ephzibeth HIRST. I checked the image and yes, it really is Ephzibeth, but I can't see any death or marriage for Ephzibeth Hirst- I wonder if they decided if it was too much trouble to keep explaining it and reverted to Elizabeth. Do any of your Elizabeth's siblings have obscure biblical names? regards, Lesley ________________________________ From: Ian <ianbrooke@hotmail.com> To: Yorkshire List <WEST-RIDING-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, 14 October 2011, 18:47 Subject: [WRY] Rastrick Hi, I’m having trouble finding the birth certificate for my Gt Gt Grandmother, Elizabeth Hirst. Before 1837 parents were hardly ever given in marriage records. The only extra information you are likely to find is the bridegroom's occupation, whether one or both were of the same parish or another parish, names of witnesses and the name of the incumbent who conducted the service. -- Roy Stockdill Genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." If a marriage is prior to 1837 it is very unlikely that a fathers name will be found, UK marriage records before Civil registration (1837) do not contain fathers names. I cannot say which place is best to see the records that you are looking for, but Bradford central library has an archive, part of the West Yorkshire Archives Service (WYAS), so may be able to help. Otherwise it may be best to contact the main WYAS centre in Wakefield. Both Clayton and Queensbury (see below) have their own Parish Churches and lots of chapels of various types. However I can comment on the "Dolphin" item. I used to live at Clayton Heights in Bradford. The village of Clayton is next to where I lived, but with Clayton Heights being some 300ft higher up the hill. Nearby is the township of Queensbury, which boasts two "Dolphin" Public Houses, both on the same road (the A647), but at opposite sides of the township. The first, and oldest is "The Old Dolphin" (which used to be my local) and the other is "The New Dolphin" about a mile away. The Old Dolphin is actually in Scarlet Heights, supposedly so called because of a (Civil War - War of the Roses??) battle nearby. The area near to the Old Dolphin and Scarlet Heights may well have been referred to as "Dolphin" in the past, but more recently would have been taken as part of Queensbury, which used to be and Urban District Council in its own right. It is also possible that the area near "The New Dolphin" was also referred to as "Dolphin" but I think the "Old Dolphin"/Scarlet Heights area is much more likely. Map centered on Clayton is at http://g.co/maps/recf9 Map centered on Old Dolphin is at http://g.co/maps/7egsr Map centered on New Dolphin is at http://g.co/maps/9nrv3 If you select any of the maps and zoom out you will see the how they relate to each other. I hope some of this may help. Subsequent censuses show Mary was born in Clayton, and 1861 states Dolphin. It seems to me that my only hope of getting any further is to find the baptisms of Mary, Samuel, Hannah and Nancy to find out how they are related. Thank you in advance for any advice or help on how to solve this mystery, Jenny Parker Some useful websites - FREECEN - http://www.freecen.org.uk/ FREEBMD - http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ FREEREG - http://www.freereg.org.uk/ Want to know where a place in Yorkshire is - Try Genuki http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to WEST-RIDING-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
Hi Ellen Ancestry have the 1927 Kelly's for the West Riding. I can't see an Alfred TAYLOR, but it is far from a complete list of Huddersfield residents as there isn't a single one of my family listed. Were any of the sons old enough to have their own homes? Hello Kate The youngest would have been abt 20, yrs of birth were 1903, 1906, 1909, but none married by 1929 so doubt they owned their own homes. Have sent note to Huddersfield Library for possible lookup & waiting to hear. Thank you so much for your response. Ellen
Thanks so much Michael & Geoff, will try the Library Ellen
