All other census returns have her born in Wigan but Im thinking this could be a clue. Her maiden name was Horrocks and 2 of my Wigan Horrocks declare birth place to be Yorkshire in 1 census only. Ann Horrocks circa 1823 says Leeds and William circa 1821 says N/K Yorkshire. >>Its a mystery. Looking at the image, I'd definitely read it as Norbary: there is a squiggle above the r as if the writer changed his mind, and it can look a bit like another b. Which would lead, as someone else suggested, to Norbury, Halifax. Hope this helps Maggie

    3. Hi Ian, Just to enlighten you a little as I think this may help with your problem. Many Bishops in Yorkshire refused to allow the LDS access to their Parish Registers so many were NOT filmed by them until quite recently, and many have yet to be filmed. Once they have been filmed they then have to be indexed to be placed on the IGI before you or I can do the research from the comfort of our own home. This is all done by volunteers. The YAS which I gave you the URL for in other e-mails have indexed some Parish Registers but not all by a long shot. I believe Wetherby & Tadcaster would now come under Leeds Family History Society so you can check with them if they have CD's. but they will only be indexes I am sure. Just checked Tadcaster, their registers are at the Borthwick. I also spotted this on Genuki for Wetherby which comes under Spofforth & the records are deposited at the YAS in Leeds. Transcripts and Indexes: 1.. CMB 1599-1837; TI; YAS 2.. M 1599-1837; TI; BMI; SOG, YCL 3.. M 1653-1680; MSTNI; LYMI; SOG . The only other way you are going to get the full entry is if they have been filmed by the LDS and you can read them for yourself at the nearest Family History Center to where you live. The Bishops Transcripts with be at the Borthwick in York. You did not cause a problem with your last question that's how you learn. I still don't think you have a grip on where the material is for Yorkshire and that's why you are floundering. I think you need to find out exactly where the registers are so then you will know how easy or difficult it is for someone to fulfil your request. Parish Register depositories in Yorkshire. http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/Misc/CBW/YPRsAbbreviations.html Please check the Hugh Wallis Site as both Wetherby & Tadcaster have been filmed but maybe not for the dates you want. If you check the LDS Library out on the LDS Site you will see exactly what has been filmed. I am always amazed that folks don't use this site more. Living in Canada I don't know where I would be without it. Certainly not doing family history if I had to rely on someone else to search all the time for me....... That the fun part. Yorkshire has a way to go to catch up on some counties but its a far better than it was 10 years ago. Kindest regards. Elaine in Ottawa. 3. Hello again listers As my first posting to this list on 3 Oct proved rather controversial, I am a bit nervous about another posting .....but here goes. Responses from this list have helped me to eliminate several parishes in my search for PICK baptisms 1795-1801. It would seem that PICK families lived around this time in Wetherby and Tadcaster but the parish records for both appear to be missing from the IGI. Does any kind person have easy access to the baptism records for Tadcaster St Mary and/or Wetherby CofE Chapelry. If so I would be very grateful for information on any PICK baptisms in either "parish" between 1795 and 1801. My specific interest is in Harriet PICK born approx 1797 but other PICK baptisms ( and infant burials) would be of help too. If anyone on this list is interested in Hampshire look ups I may be able to help. Thanks Ian L

    1. [WRY] CORE family of Hellifield
    2. Chris
    3. I have Henry CORE my 3 x gt grandfather who according to all Lancashire census from 1841, was born in Yorkshire. Mainly each census suggests Skipton but in 1851 it appears he was born in Hellifield. Looking through the IGI, I find a christening for Henry at Long Preston parents are Richard CORE and Ellen. I have also found a marriage of Richard Core and Ellen Bashal 5th Jan 1795 again Long Preston. In 1841 Richard Core age 65 is living in Hellifield. At the same address is Ellin Core age 30. I don't assume for one minute that this is Ellen Bashal but I am now very stuck. How can I prove any connection between Richard and Henry CORE? I see this area is covered by Wharfdale FHS but can find no reference to the area on their website. I am unable to travel due to ill health. Any other suggestions would be most helpfull regards, Chris

Hello Roy, first my appologies for talking to you via another persons heading, I should not have done this. Now to make my position clear.I would never, never , ask someone to search several parishes for me as I know how time consuming it would be.I would also like to add that if someone does me a favour I would hope to be able to reciprocate in some way. I have been on the India list for some time now,a lot of my ancestors left England to go out and serve with the East India Company.People have done lookups for me, and I , in turn ,have done a lot of transcribing and look ups in old books , that was my way of saying thank you,not just for those who helped me, but for others as well. I was lucky when I came on this list to be offered a lookup by Anne Lucas for my ancestor Samuel Firth, however,he did not turn up in the Dewsbury records, where he finally decided he was born.(He originally said Barnsly.)Anne offered to look at further parishes for me, but, I would not dream of taking advantage of her big hearted offer.I think I have now found him , through the L.D.S.on line records, in Birstall, something I shall have to follow up at a later date. You seem a very knowledgable person and obviously offer a lot to this list.I on the other hand as a newbie, have a lot to learn.I came on this list hoping I might find a connection to my line of Firths, having failed on all other avenues, and to learn a little about West Riding.I hope that is what I will do. regards from, Annabelle.

    3. Steve - I can offer you a little information on the FROSTs of Ackton. I trace back to a Yorkshire family named BECKWITH, one of whom, Thomas, in the 16th century married one Frances FROST, daughter and sole heir of William Frost of Ackton (this according to the various Visitations). Their eldest son Thomas Beckwith was baptised at Featherstone 3 Apr 1569. This Beckwith branch was "of Ackton" for at least three generations, perhaps four. Sorry I can offer nothing more on this Frost family. 3. Hi Listers, according to White's Directory of Ripon 1837 Mrs Mary YALE has a listing under the heading Miscellany of Trades. The "business" is listed at Coltsgate Hill. Have any listers got access to any directories of the same period which might give some clue as to the nature of the business? I am also still hitting a brick wall with Mary's parents. I know her father was one, William FENTON esq and her mother was Isabella, but all the William FENTONs I've come across either died unmarried or married a different woman. I've searched the BMDs and census but William died before 1841 as Isabella is listed as a widow then. I also think that they were a wealthy family because Isabella and Mary had independent means and Mary later became a Chancery Lunatic. Apologies to all who read some of this the last time I submitted it but I thought there may be some new listers since last time. Any help would be appreciated Regards Paul in Nottingham

That is why I always recommend those who are unfamiliar with the geography of Yorkshire to use Google extensively and also the Yorkshire pages of GENUKI, which can normally answer just about everything you need to know about the county. For instance, there is a whole section at GENUKI called "Where is it in Yorkshire?" I seem to recall from your original message that you were asking someone to search every parish between Leeds and York for you. That is simply not a practical proposition and could take months! Both Leeds and York themselves are covered by many parishes, not to mention all the ones in between the two cities. My purpose in suggesting you first use Google and Genuki to research Yorkshire is because so many newcomers seem to have little idea of how vast the county is - well, in UK terms anyway. I believe I am right in saying that North Yorkshire alone is geographically the largest county in England, and that is without counting, West, East and South Yorkshire (of course, there never was a South Riding, just West, North and East Ridings. South Yorkshire is a post-1974 invention). In population terms, Yorkshire has always held within its borders around 10 per cent of the population of England and Wales, and its population today is about the same as the whole of Scotland and over twice that of Wales. Yorkshire's population is also larger than that of Ireland, even with Northern Ireland and the Republic added together. This is why I always emphasise the sheer size of the county when newcomers blithely ask for look-ups. -- Roy Stockdill Editor, Journal of One-Name Studies Guild of One-Name Studies website: www.one-name.org Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about."
