I have located the actual site of the pub, using a 1961 Ordnance Survey map, kindly helped by staff in Kirklees Local Studies. The address of the Boar's Head was 26 Wakefield Road, Moldgreen up to 1919 and from 1920 onwards is shown as 210 Wakefield Road. I am assuming the most likely explanation of this is a re-numbering of Wakefield Road. The Boar's Head is variously shown as a beerhouse and inn. The pub was situated on the right hand side of Wakefield Road (leaving Huddersfield) just before the turn off to Almondbury Bank and after the Rookery Road junction. The pub and the 2 houses in Boar's Head Yard were literally surrounded by Mills and Works. I have tried all the usual online sources including Kirklees local studies, Kirklees Image Archive, Andrew Loughran's website, Search engines etc but with no success. Hi Marina I could be wrong but I believe that at these early dates, the only "benefits" available to anyone were in the form of poor relief and/or local charitable support, from church, chapel or benefactor. If Emma's mother was of independent means as "Proprietor of Houses" seems to suggest, then it's unlikely Emma would qualify for poor relief or charity. In which case, the answer to your question of whether the widowed mum supported them all is likely to be yes, though of course if they were less well-off, Emma or her mum might have done other bits of work to supplement their incomes, taking in washing and so on. Women's work was often poorly reflected in census returns. On the other hand, if John WHITTAKER went to India for work reasons and was employed by the East India Company either as a civilian or in their Army (which became part of the British Army after the Indian Mutiny in the 1850s), and if he died while there, there might (big 'might') have been a widow's pension for Emma, assuming she was still legally 'with' John and he had declared her existence. Records about India and the East India Company are more easily accessible now at the British Library's website: http://indiafamily.bl.uk/UI/Home.aspx and at sites like FIBIS: http://www.fibis.org and Indian Cemeteries: http://www.indian-cemeteries.org. There is also a mailing list for India, whose members I found incredibly helpful a few years ago. Hope this helps. He was a joiner, carpenter, builder by occupation, and died some time between 1857 and 1865 possibly in Bombay, India. Elizabeth ARMITAGE was a widow who according to census records was a "Proprietor of Houses". Daughter Emma LEE did not work. Would Emma LEE have been able to collect some kind of widow's benefit for herself and her daughters? If so where would I find records for this? If not, would it be feasible that her mother Elizabeth ARMITAGE financially supported herself, daughter and granddaughter? Hi, Reviewing the e-mail that I sent to the list earlier today (copy below) I was appalled to see that I hadn't used the word 'please' anywhere. Apologies for this unintended lack of manners, David Hi, I wonder if anybody has access to the PRs of East Ardsley and can see if there is any additional information available-marital status, parish of origin of groom, names of the witnesse etc. for the following IGI entry: - 16th May 1826 East Ardsley James Broadhead to Elizabeth Westmoreland I'm trying to arrange all the James Broadhead families in the area and wonder if this James was a widower and the death in Dewsbury (1824 May 29 bur Elizabeth, wife of James Broadhead of Dewsbury, aged 24) could possibly be his first wife. Any help would be gratefully received, Thanks, David Drake

Steve Whitwam has a great web site and lists many Whitwam ancestors plus on the forum he often offers more information from his extensive database. I don't have the URL in my laptop and my home computer is off being repaired. Put Colne Valley and/or Steve Whitwam into google. Steve might even read this and reply to you, he is subscribed to WRY list I think. Jean in far west of S.
