    1. Re: [WRY] online registers, Bingo! the site opened today.

    3. I agree with Jean. We two must have been the unlucky ones yesterday. I too found that the YKS parish register section of the Internet Archive site opened first time for me this morning when I tried. I have been glued to it most of the day, fitting in making meals during the day has been the only nuisance I encountered today. I have found pages and pages of at least one parish that contains the name HIRST/HURST/HYRST, a very common name in Yorkshire. I next have to go through these PRs looking for DUNHILL and variants to find which parishes they lived in. I discovered that by going to the end of a given parish's record on the site I found the index to surnames where there is an alphabetical list by first names with page numbers for each entry of where each first name appears under a given surname, if you see what I mean. Thankyou David for putting the link on the list yesterday. Regards Jenny DeAngelis Spain.

    3. Although these registers do not apply to any of my ancestors in the West Riding, Yorkshire (Irish immigrants), it is very exciting to see records that early. I learned more about Latin also... Great resource!! Ann Harney

    1. Re: [WRY] parish records
    2. I've examined both the West Riding and Leeds pages, now, Collin, but they are a bit too early for me. I am in need of the 1770's to 1810's period in all branches I'm researching in Yorkshire. my people of interest are Charles Murfitt b. abt 1777, d. abt 1843, son of either John Murfitt and Sarah Charlesworth or Samuel Murfitt and Frances Chew. Charles m. first Sarah Clifforth/Clifford, no data on her, but they were married 6 Apr 1801 in Birstall and she had one known child, William Clifforth Murfitt b. 24 Nov 1803 Birstall who's name changed to William Clifford Moffitt when he moved to the U.S. Sarah died before 7 Mar 1806 in Birstall. she might be Sally Clifford chr. 6 Oct 1779 Birstall dau. of William. Charles Murfitt m. 2nd to Martha Scholefield 17 Nov 1806 Birstall. I do not know if they had any children. William m. Martha Mason b. 25 Mar 1810 Armley, she was a daughter of William Mason b. 2 Jun 1774 Armley and Martha Smith, no data on her. we do know that William Mason and Martha Smith married 1 May 1796 in Batley. I have not found when or where William Murfitt and Martha Mason married. it is believed she came to America with her brother William, and that their brother Christopher followed afterwards. also, it is believed that William Murfitt came with William Mason. I have yet to find immigration records for them, though. William Murfitt and Martha Mason are found in Northampton, Massachusetts, U.S.A. in the 1840 census. William Mason is living next door to them in 1850, and cannot be found in 1840 in the U.S. or 1841 in England, so the supposition that they came together (along with the family stories) may be wrong. we believe that William Mason Sr.'s father was Christopher Mason but have nothing more on him. if I could access the parish records for those periods and dates, I might find more on the people I'm researching, but I haven't accessed them as yet. we do know they were Church of England. we've been fortunate to find a lot of birth dates for the family, and do have their chr. dates, as well. I hope I haven't left out any data that should be here. regards, BODY { font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:12px; } Cornelia On Sun 12/13/09 12:01 AM , [email protected] sent: Today's Topics: 1. 3. Jean, hi, Yes, although more commonly written as xiv, xiiij is 14 and xj is 11. The Latin alphabet didn't have a 'j' and I believe that adding a tail to the final 'i' in numerals was simply the style of the period, as any contemporary reader would know it was not a 'j'. In text also, where names were latinised, 'i' could be substituted for 'j' as in Benjamin/Beniamin. Similarly, 's' was often written as what we see as an 'f' with a tail and 'u' & 'v' were interchangeable. There is a guide to the Latin used in parish registers on the FreeREG site (amongst many other sites); try these links. http://www.freereg.org.uk/howto/readnumbers.htm http://www.freereg.org.uk/howto/latinnames.htm http://www.freereg.org.uk/howto/latinwords.htm Regards, Dom O'malley.

    1. Re: [WRY] parish records and openlibrary.org
    2. thank you to all who replied, both to me personally and to others on the list, you've been very helpful. what I could not access yesterday works fine today, including the Y. archealogical society site, so all is well. esp. thanks to Andy for that list! Y. A. S. has two numbers for Birstall, and since Horbury is #3 on your list, then I assume the #3 they have for Birstall is for another list. I would assume that makes the other number, #164, Birstall's number for the list Andy posted, which would mean that there are hundreds of parish records not available for free online. well, off to do more digging around, it's been a while so there's lots of new items of interest. oh, since I'm here, don't forget to check openlibrary.org. lots of scanned books to read on it, and my favorite reading program of all that are on the net. pages flip smoothly and type is clear and easy on the eyes. a check of Birstall displayed 3 pages of books of interest for that parish. unfortunately in this instance, none have been scanned. but they will be, some day. they do include the Parish records of Birstall. this company scans books from everywhere in the world, and also lists books that they have not yet been cleared to scan, and books they have not yet got around to scanning, but I've already made a few breakthroughs from books they have scanned. they are actively busy scanning books, so if the book you want isn't scanned, keep checking back. I found a book written by a distant cousin, Walter Burton Harris of Surrey and Morocco, scanned at openlibrary. I found that many U.S. county histories are also scanned at openlibrary. it's a treasure trove for researchers. Cornelia BODY { font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:12px; }

    1. Re: [WRY] online registers
    2. In medieval texts and some early printed books, the numerals are written in lower case letters and u was frequently substituted for v. In the final position of the numeral, j could be used instead of i. So 18 could be written xuiij rather than XVIII. These substitutions are particularly found in italic fonts. Me again this bit explains so your xiiij is 14th printed that way instead of xiiii

    3. Hi Cornelia, I have some of the Leeds registers on-line on the Genuki site (transcribed by Jack Parry and David Simpson). These go up to around the mid 1700s. There are also some of the early Armley registers there. (see the Leeds Parish page). Best wishes, Colin Hinson In the village of Blunham in Bedfordshire U.K. Webmaster for the Genuki Yorkshire pages: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ Old and Rare Yorkshire Books on searchable CDroms: http://www.YorkshireCDbooks.com >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> > after digging in to nearly every single one of the Yorkshire parish >registers, more than half of which do not state up front which parish >they are for, and some having 3 books for the parish when others have >only one, I was quite disappointed to learn that none of these were >for my parishes of interest. the ones I didn't dig into did have the >parish name up front. does anyone know if books have been published >for the parishes of; > > Leeds, Batley, Armley, Hightown, Birstall...and Littletown. my >interests are in the early 1800's and any time before that. > > regards, > > Cornelia

    3. Thanks to ChrisB for listing the available parishes; I haven't got that far with Yorkshire, having just turned my attention there from the Lancashire registers. The easiest way to find files of interest to yourself is to search with just your relevant parish name and then recheck the site periodically as new stuff is appearing all the time. I opened one file and found it had only been uploaded 25 minutes before. I first came across the site a couple of months ago and started looking at the Lancashire registers first because there weren't many Yorkshire parishes listed. Last night, before posting the message, I checked three counties, searching by 'parish register .....shire' and found 61 Yorkshire files, 48 Lancashire files and 2 Cheshire files. Regards, Dom O'Malley.
