    1. [WRY] York records
    2. Dear Listers, As it's quiet on the list, I hope you don't mind my asking about records just outside the West Riding. I've got out of my depth! I'm tracking the life of Irving CROWTHER, born in Halifax 5 Feb 1884. I have obtained the death certificate for an Irving CROWTHER for a death on first of June 1967, correct age of 83 years. There really are very few candidates of this name, so I'm reasonably confident this is my man. But frustratingly, he died as a result of being "struck by a motor cycle whilst walking on the highway" and was taken to Poppleton Gate Hospital, in York. There was an inquest: the certificate was received by the Registrar from the Coroner for the City of York, and makes no mention of family members at all. His address is given as 33 Boroughbridge Road York, but I have no addresses for him between then and 1914 when he lived in Newcastle on Tyne, so can't use that for continuity. If I can confirm any family members, I think I can accept this is my man and make further checks - I'd like to know, for example, whether his wife Ethel was still alive, and if there were any children. Can anyone please advise what newspapers would have carried the report from an inquest? or any funeral notice? I just don't know York at all, and have little to go on, so absolutely any suggestions are welcome! (I know, the first one will be "join the York list"!!) Many thanks! Maggie

    1. [WRY] Kirkby Malzeard Parish Registers/Marmaduke Horseman
    2. Colin Hinson
    3. Hi Janet, Have you information that would lead you to believe that there were parish registers before 1653 ? 1653 is the earliest date in Colin Blanshard Withers's book and would probably be correct for the start of the registers. Kirkby Malzeard was an ancient parish and so the records would be there (i.e. at the parish church) as opposed to Pateley Bridge which was a chapelry of Ripon. (See the Genuki pages for more information). 3. Does anyone know what happened to the Kirkby Malzeard PRs for the years prior to 1653? Are they just lost or were they recorded somewhere else, like Patley Bridge? I am searching for a Marmaduke Horseman (Quaker) who went to New Jersey in 1679 with a family (dau Susannah b. abt 1665 - m. 1686 in NJ) and I think that he may have been from Kirkby Malzeard. I find 2 Marmaduke Horsemans in the 1672 Hearth Tax rolls living in Stonebeck Down, which is in Kirkby Malzeard parish. There are no other Marmaduke Horsemans in the Hearth Tax rolls in West YKS in 1672. There should be a marriage and birth of children in England. I have looked at the Kirkby Malzeard PR transcripts and do not find the family. Now, I have not looked at the original registers, so I do not know what they look like or whether there are huge gaps. Has anyone seen the actual registers? Of course, part of the problem may be the Interregnum but I many events would have been prior to that, including Marmaduke's birth. Interestingly, there is a Marmaduke Horseman who was hung at York Castle in 1670 for murdering a gamekeeper. One of the Marmaduke Horseman Stonebeck Down hearths was "empty" in 1672. Perhaps the murder Marmaduke? By the way, the IGI gives a marriage for the Quaker Marmaduke Horseman in 1634 in Keighley. The Keighley PR entry from the transcript gives no more information than the date of the marriage and name of the parties. The date and location seem wrong to me for this Marmaduke Horseman. There are also several Marmaduke Horsemans in the baptisms at Ripon in the 1620s and 30s who could be the right one, but who knows? I have not found a will that clears that up for me. 3. Is anyone out there researching the Mawson name in Rawdon circa 1800?  Benjamin Mawson born 3 Dec 1797.  Married Mary Hollins or Hollings 15 Oct 1821. St. Oswalds Church of England, Guiseley, Yorkshire, England. I am trying to determine who Benjamin's parents were.  I guess that maybe they were Thomas Mawson born 6 Apr 1772 in Ecclesal and Rachel Nichols born 1775 in Guiseley Parish.  I am trying to prove that they also had a son named Edmund Mawson (a brother to my Benjamin) born circa 1810. Any help will be appreciated.  I have hit my perverbial "stone wall"! Thanks, Ron Costello in Germany

    2. Could this be your man.....perhaps the informant didn't know his exact age: June Qtr. 1934 FRED CORBETT Age 70 Registered at Wortley 9c 329 mary lou I am new to the list, and I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction I am trying to find the death of a Fred Corbett. He was born in the September Quarter 1871 in the district of Sheffield, West Riding of Yorkshire. Fred was one of eight children born to John Corbett and Elizabeth nee Clarke. Elizabeth died in the December Quarter 1880 at Rotherham. Fred married in the June Quarter 1892 in Rotherham to Fanny Trickett Hawke. Fanny was born in the December Quarter 1868 at Rotherham. Fanny's parents were Samuel and Emma Hawke nee Trickett. Samuel was a mason/builder. Fred and Fanny had 5 children, 3 of which lived. They were Emma Elizabeth Corbett (1893 - 1988) and married Harold Brooke. The second was John William Corbett (1895 - ), not sure if he married. And number 3 was Harold Corbett (1896 - ) apparently the black sheep of the family. I have the 1901 census and at that time the family was altogether. In 1911, I find Fanny Corbett the head aged 41, martial status is married for 18 years. She resides at 6 Beaumont St, Hoyland Common with her single sons John William 16 Potter's assistant and Harold 14 house builders apprentice. Fanny's father Samuel lives at 72 Chapel St, Hoyland Common in 1911. He is the Head and a widower aged 71 with an occupation of builder stone mason, bricklayer. And his son Albert Hawke (39 ) single. >From the 1911 census I am missing Emma Elizabeth. AT that time she wasn't married, and she is known never to have left England, however one of her children later did, but the rest of the family stayed in England. >From the 1911 census I am also missing Fred. It is known by the family that Fred walked out on them, and the surviving grandchildren of Fred and Fanny's don't know where Fred is/buried. I can't find a death for him, I can't find another marriage, I thought he may have left to go to Canada, but I proved that wrong. There is another story, but how true it is, I don't know. And that is Samuel didn't really like Fred, even though Samuel took Fred on in the building/mason game. It is believed they had a falling out and Fred is under some stone work of Samuel's. Which I am too starting to agree with, because I just can't find him. Any help/suggestions to this weird problem is most welcome. PS - I have also contacted the Archives, they were helpful, but couldn't provide anymore information then what I have found out. 3. Hi Christopher It should be possible to check this using a street directory of that period. This may call for a quick trip over to Yorkshire for you, as the library in Batley will almost certainly have a copy - worth giving them a ring to ask first. Alternatively, if your g/mother had a phone, she might appear in the telephone book archives on www.ancestry.co.uk . I think there were many ways he could have disappeared himself though, eg. going to Europe, which would be a lot harder for us to track I think. Anyway, have you tried asking the CORBETT One Name Study if they have any info about him? You never know, someone else might have sent in helpful info. I have CORBETTs from Durham-Northumberland and the ONS has been incredibly informative. 3. Hi everyone Thanks to all who replied re 'j' being used in roman numerals on the online registers. It was very helpful and I'd never have thought of it being an extra digit. Like Jenny I spent over 6 hours just going through the Snaith one yesterday - wish I'd found the marriages first as I could then have searched for the offspring linked to the female side whose name would have changed after marriage. Having found many Rudd's I now need a link after 1650 to show that these were probably my Rhodes side - I found more than 30 Rudd's and only about 5 or 6 Rodes and as mine were not gentry I'm more inclined to think they'd have had quite large families. Next is the Dewsbury line which I thought was only listed from sometime in 1800s but on opening the register it again went back to 1500s. Can't wait to get at it! Happy Christmas everyone. Jean
