Hi, I've been asked, off-list, how to find individual parishes; read on. The site is very poorly indexed with some of the search results (the list that appears) containing neither the name of the parish nor the 'Yorkshire Parish Register Society' volume number. This seems to be being rectified as all the most recent 30 or 40 uploads have one or the other and are repeats of already uploaded volumes. Yesterdays 129 search results actually cover only 73 YPRS volumes. To find an individual parish, in the search box at the top of the site page, use the 4 search words 'parish', 'register', 'yorkshire' and the name of the parish. Jean This sounds very likely to have been in the newspaper (I found quite a detailed one of my gg-grandfather who died in 1895 in an accident.) You could try the Huddersfield Examiner, as it would have been around at that time http://www.examiner.co.uk/ In the past I've also found the Local History dept of Huddersfield Library very helpful, they photocopied an report for me*, althought that was about 5 years ago. My late dad arranged it, I have a note from him saying the contact was ' a very useful chap called Frank on 01484 226300'. * incidentally, that newspaper report, from 1936, was headed 'Exciting scene at Ravensthorpe, two men knocked down, one dies from injuries'. Not sure we'd use 'exciting' to describe that these days! Good luck with it Kim --- On Wed, 3/2/10, jean and terry <[email protected]> wrote: From: jean and terry <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [WRY] Inquest details in Newspaper To: [email protected] Date: Wednesday, 3 February, 2010, 8:53 The Huddersfield Chronicle had a detailed account of a suicide incident and inquest in 1864. Helen, hi, I've been to their site and it only appears to list what is currently available in book form, not what was originally published, probably because many of the publications are now only available in CD form. Also, the web link seems to have been gnarled in the ether; let's see if this is clearer http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=parish%20register%20yorkshire&sort=- publicdate Dom.

Thank you to all who responded to my query about what Ben Rhydding was like in the mid 1800s. Regards Anne Megget
Was Ben Rhydding a village or settlement in 1857 or was the Hydro establishment really the only thing there. I have just found in the Glasgow Herald for Oct 1857 the notice of my relative's death "suddenly at Ben Rhydding near Otley, Yorkshire -----". I am wondering if he was there on business, passing through, staying with friends etc or taking the waters and am trying to get a picture of what Ben Rhydding may have been like in 1857. His death is not on the Scottish or English death indexes although his will states that he died in Glasgow. In light of my recent find in the Glasgow Herald he died in Ben Rhydding. Thank you for any help Anne Megget New Zealand
Hi Ben Rhydding is at Ikley Bill :-)
It runs in my memory that Ben is what they call mountains in scotland. It may be the name of a farmhouse. I learn more about the geography of Britain from a combination of genealogy and watch "escape to the country", property ladder, and location, location" on my pay TV. I wasn't much good at geography at school. Jean in S. Browsing this afternoon I have discovered that there is a Bowthwaite/Bouthwaite in North Yorkshire, so I felt maybe the West Riding is the wrong path to follow. Until, I found an entry for a Poll taken in the West Riding a for knight which mentions Bowthwaite. I seem to remember having read something about a place in North Yorkshire which said it was not to be confused with North Riding. I notice on the map I pulled up Bowthwaite appears to be more West than East. Lefayre.
A big thank you, to the site, and to all those lovely people who answered my question. On the Web I have found the following:- http://inman.surnameweb.org/documents/nidderdale2.htm which indicates that Robert Duffeild made an attack on John Bayne of Riggs on the 25th May 1598, at Heslehurst, Bowthwaite. (Session Roll, see Yorks. Rec. Series). I have been researching my family tree for over 60 years and think I found Bowthwaite as being in the West Riding. There is a Latin record from the Session Rolls on the Web in the record series 03 york, which states 'apud Bowthwaite pd in West? Com pd in quodm loco ibm vocat Heslehurst in & sup etc. It is 60 years since I left school so my memory of Latin has rather faded. I gather it was written in the 6th year of the reign of Elizabeth I. My French is a little rusty too but I remember more of it than my Latin! >From the National Archives site I found:- Crown confirmation of grant of manors and lands in Yorkshire and Lancashire MD335/6/68/1 9 May 1538. Confirmaiton by Henry VIII to sir Arthur D'arcy, knight ............,rents and premises in Heslehurst, Waddington......Leeds.....With transcript of same, 19th century. I shall endeavour to follow the very helpful suggestions given. Lefayre.

Hi Lefayre, There is a Hazelhurst near Ashton under Lyne, which is close to the Yorkshire border but in Lancashire now. Maybe it was part of Yorkshire in the 1500's . Some of my ancestors from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, moved to Hazelhurst in the 1800's. I've been to see it but there are lots of modern houses there now, plus a council estate. Another "Must See" site is genuki http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS Searching there for Heslehurst showed up just one reference in the Pickering Board of Guardians. I would expect Hazelhurst or Hazlehurst to be the current spelling (10 and 6 matches respectively) although spellings can change significantly with time. Does your document give any more context? Personally the nearest I can get to such a place is Hazelhead which is between Hepworth and Langsett on the A616 south of Huddersfield (where Hepworth Iron used to be - maybe still are - and there's a big wind farm nearby now).
