Hi, I doubt I can be of help but the name seemed a bit familiar and I have just checked the 1851 census and John ELLAM is living with Thomas Lee and his family with his wife Eliza Pashley. I seem to recollect that the name Armitage popped up somewhere but I can't remember where. I am being snowed under with new names before I can actually work them out. Several of the ELLAM lived in the Crosland Moor area and had their children baptised there. They were Methodist. I have found contact with others researching the family lines on Ancestry and in some cases they share birth, death and marriage certificates and I have done the same so I reckon all the contacts I have made and the photos and certificates have covered my subscription costs. Hi, At least 76 free-to-view early Yorkshire parish register transcriptions are currently on this site (as are parishes from many other counties): http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=parish%20register%20yorkshire&sort=- publicdate This search used the words 'parish', register' & 'yorkshire'. Uploads are continuing and I will be monitoring and updating my list. The site probably contains other parishes found by different searches; if you know of any, please let me know. And please pass this on to other lists, Dom O'Malley. The following 4 parishes are found by searching just the parish name (delete the current 3 search words) Ecclesfield, 1558-1619 Dewsbury (pt 1), 1538-1653 Kirk Ella, c & b 1558-1837, m 1558-1841 Stokesley, 1571-1750 Most of the rest, listed below, can be found by adding the parish name to the existing 3 search words. A few will need the volume number (to the left of the name, below) adding to the existing 3 search words, in the form 'volume 13'. 2 parishes can only be found by their position on the list when the list is sorted by 'date added'; Aldborough is 20th from the bottom/end, Hickleton is 5th from the bottom/end. 110, Aldborough (pt 1), 1538-1611 31, Allerton Mauleverer, 1557-1812 39, Austerfield Chapel, Blyth Parish, 1559-1812 8, Blacktoft, 1700-1812 22, Bolton-by-Bolland, 1725-1812 19, Bolton-by-Bolland (pt 1), 1558-1724 12, Brantingham, 1653-1812 2, Burton Fleming, 1538-1812 15, Cherry Burton, c 1597-1740, m 1562-1740, b 1561-1740 Conistone, St. Mary, Burnsall-in-Craven, 1567-1812 43, Danby-in-Cleveland, 1585-1812 49, Darrington, 1567-1812 54, East Rounton, Rudby-in-Cleveland parish, 1595-1837 56, Farnham, 1569-1812 46, Garforth, 1631-1812 28, Gargrave, 1558-1812 90, Great Ayton, 1600-1812 23, Grinton in Swaledale, c & b 1640-1807, m 1640-1802 25, Hackness, 1567-1783 37, Halifax (pt 1), c 1538-1593 45, Halifax (pt 2), m & b 1538-1593 13, Hampsthwaite (pt 1), m 1603-1807, c & b 1603-1794 50, Harewood, c 1614-1812, m 1621-1812 17, Hartshead, 1612-1812 109, Hickleton, 1626-1812 3, Horbury, 1598-1812 48, Howden, 1725-1812 21, Howden (pt 1), 1543-1659 24, Howden (pt 2), 1543-1702 32, Howden (pt 2 cont), from 1659(?) 36, Huggate, 1539-1812 61, Kilburn, 1600-1812 47, Kildwick-in-Craven, St. Andrew , 1575-1622 55, Kildwick-in-Craven, St. Andrew (pt 2 & 3), 1623-1678 69, Kildwick-in-Craven, St. Andrew (pt 4,5,6), 1678-1743 10, Kippax, 1539-1812 35, Kirklington, 1658-1812 26, Ledsham, 1539-1812 5, Linton-in-Craven (pt 1), 1562-1779 18, Linton-in-Craven (pt 2 +), cmb 1779-1812 + m 1754-1778 16, Marske in Cleveland, 1569/70-1812 64, Mirfield (pt 1), 1559-1700 5, Monk Fryston, 1538-1678 33, Otley (pt 1), 1562-1672 44, Otley (pt 2), 1672-1750/53 6, Patrington, 1579-1731 20, Pickhill-cum-Roxby, c 1571-1812, m & b 1567-1812 117, Rillington, 1638-1812 80, Ripon, 1574-1628 34, Rothwell, c & b 1690-1763, m 1690-1812 27, Rothwell (pt 1), 1588-1689 51, Rothwell (pt 3), c & b 1763-1812 8, Scorborough (as spelt) , 1653-1803 38, Settrington, 1559-1812 58, Sheffield (pt 1), c & m 1560-1634 60, Sheffield (pt 2), c & m 1635-1653, b 1560-1634 68, Sheffield (pt 3), c & m 1653-1686, b 1635-1653 57, Snaithe (pt 1), c 1558-1657, m 1537-1657 29, Terrington, 1599/1600-1812 42, Thirsk, 1556-1721 30, Thornhill, c & m 1580-1742/45, b 1580-1678 40, Thornhill (pt 2 + Flockton), 1717-1812, m from 1754 53, Thornhill (pt 3 + Flockton), 1717-1812, m from 1754 14, Wath-upon-Dearne, 1598-1778/79 4, Winestead, in Holderness, 1578-1812 71, Wintringham, 1558-1812 41, York, Holy Trinity, Goodramgate, 1573-1812 52, York, St Mary, Bishophill Junior, 1602-1812 1, York, St Michael le Belfrey (pt 1), 1565-1653 11, York, St Michael le Belfrey (pt 2), 1653-1772/78 70, York, St. Crux (pt 1), 1539-1716 36, York, St. Martin, Coney Street, 1557-1812
Hi Jean There are plenty of Armitages in Almondbury - distinguishing them all is "interesting"! Best Wishes, Andy. Hi Lesley Thanks for your offer - I think this one goes on the back burner until either I win the lottery or getting certificate information is cheaper - it's a far flung branch of my tree. Martha Matilda Armitage married Thomas Lee - I think I need that certificate to discover her ancestry. The South Crosland connection was suggested as there's no suitable baptism in Almondbury - I don't think there's evidence that she did come from South Crosland - in fact the 1861 census shows them living next to North Gate. Best Wishes, Andy. Thanks for your input - South Crosland is indeed where Jean suggests, and was a chapelry of Almondbury (see Genuki) - and not that far from Kirkheaton. I hadn't seen the Kirkheaton one (thanks Maggie) but there are 2 Marthas on the 1851 census so working out which is which is going to be hard, if not impossible, unless the Matilda bit crops up somewhere, sometime. Armitage is after all a common name in that neck of the woods. I'll keep looking! Thanks for all your input. Best Wishes, Andy.

Hi Andy I have no connections to Martha Matilda ARMITAGE, but there is only one suitable candidate in the 1841 census for South Crosland: HO 107/1273/9 18 7 117 Hill Top Martha Armitage aged 8 Born in county. The household is headed by Nathan Armitage, 35, woollen weaver, born in county. The oldest female in the household is Sarah, 35. Next door (18 7 116) is the household of David Armitage, 40, a woollen weaver. I can only see one suitable candidate, the same person, in the 1851 census for South Crosland: HO107 /2291 304 1B 96 Hll Top Fold Martha Armitage daughter 17 unmarried factory girl cotton born South Crosland The household is headed by Nathan Armitage head married 45 stone delver born South Crosland. His wife Sarah, 50, was born in Honley. Sadly there is no mention of middle name Matilda by way of confirmation. I can supply more family details if needed. Regards, Lesley

I can't see her in the HDFHS South Crosland transcript. There are a number of Armitages, but none called Martha or Matilda. BBC Two documentary seriesI have just been asked to circulate the following message. Kind regards Brenda www.yorkshireancestors.com Did your family live in York exactly one hundred years ago? Have you mapped your family tree? If so, a BBC documentary needs your help! We're trying to trace descendants of the following eight families who lived in York in 1910 and who took part in a ground-breaking survey of unemployment carried out in the city by the Quaker philanthropist Seebohm Rowntree. If you think you could be related to any of these families, please phone BBC assistant producer Mora McLagan on 0208 008 5793 or email her at [email protected] The Nevinsons. Mr Nevinson was born in 1860. He had five children including a daughter aged 20 (who got married in 1910) and a son aged 12. Another daughter was at the Blind School. The Taylors Mr Taylor left for America in the early 1900's, abandoning his wife to bring up two children - a boy and a girl. Bob was born in 1898 and Kitty was born in 1900. We think Mrs Taylor's maiden name was Wade. The Campbells A Scottish family who moved to York in the early 1900's. Both Mr and Mrs Campbell were born in 1860 and they had a son born in 1898 and two daughters (but we don't know their date of birth). The Dunns Mr Dunn was born in 1853 and they had a son born in 1893 and a daughter born in 1895. The Raffertys Mr Rafferty was born in 1881 and had four children, the eldest of which was a girl. The Martins Mr Martin was born in 1861 and had a daughter born in 1892 and a son born in 1895. The Lovells Mr Lovell was born in 1877 and had four young children born in the early 1900's. The Archers Mr Archer was born in 1879 and he had two daughters born in the early 1900's called Sally and Lily and baby born in 1909. Hi Jean, recently I emailed the Huddersfield Examiner for any information on an attempted suicide of George FRANCE in Dec 1860 - I received a wonderful reply - 1)Our WEEKLY Examiner dated 8 December 1860 carried a brief report of Mr France's attempt to take his life. ( incident would be dated 4 Dec) 2)Our WEEKLY Examiner dated 15 December 1860 carried another brief report on his death and the subsequent inquest. ( death would be on 10 Dec ) I am unable to send you actual copies of these reports as I would have to enlist the assistance of another department and this would mean that our normal research/copy charges come into play. I will reproduce the reports as they appeared: 1)Attempted suicide - On Tuesday evening last, Geo.France, farmer, Deighton, attempted to commit suicide by cutting his throat with a blunt razor; but he only succeeded in inflicting a gash three inches in length, without severing the wind pipe. There is, however, no hope of his recovery. He is being attended by Mr Clough, surgeon, and another medical gentleman. 2) FATAL TERMINATION OF THE RECENT ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. George France, farmer, residing at Deighton, whose attempted suicide we recorded last week, expired on Monday night last from the effects of the wounds which he inflicted upon his throat with a blunt razor. The inquest was held on Wednesday, at The Woolpack, Deighton, before G.Dyson Esq, coroner, and a jury, when a verdict was returned that the deceased had committed self-destruction while in a fit of temporary insanity. I'm sorry that it is not pleasant reading and hope that its not too traumatic for you when you do read it. regards from a cold Huddersfield, England Stephen Carter Examiner Library/Archive. ******************** I hope this helps, happy hunting Annette WATSON Lismore 2480 At 07:23 PM 03/02/2010 +1030, you wrote: >The Huddersfield Chronicle had a detailed account of a suicide incident >and inquest in 1864. Hi, Thank you for that information I will see what I can do. My husband and I ran a funeral business in our country town for 20 years (the numbers were so low that we both worked at other jobs at the same time but I'm not easily shocked.). I even managed to watch an autopsy on one person I took to the coroner. We live in an isolated area and covered huge distances. Nothing dull about my life!!!!! Jean in S. Hi, The inquest for his brother Joshua was in the Huddersfield Chronicle but that was earlier. So far this family has 2 suicides 1 death from work accident and a daughter going to America. Parents who can't decide if they are married or widowed. Another one with a police records Not dull by any means but confusing. I will try the Huddersfield Examiner site but I have 3 people in Huddersfield who are connected with this family who can go to the library, weather permitting. I just thought I could see if records were available on line. My dad is called Frank and he helps out at the library but I doubt it is the one you mention, I don't think Dad is up to the researching. You could try the Huddersfield Examiner, as it would have been around at that time http://www.examiner.co.uk/ In the past I've also found the Local History dept of Huddersfield Library very helpful, they photocopied an report for me*, althought that was about 5 years ago. My late dad arranged it, I have a note from him saying the contact was ' a very useful chap called Frank on 01484 226300'. * incidentally, that newspaper report, from 1936, was headed 'Exciting scene at Ravensthorpe, two men knocked down, one dies from injuries'. Not sure we'd use 'exciting' to describe that these days!
