Even the images won't help in many cases if you are not familiar with an area, as in a previous message Ancestry have made a great big mess, a register listed as Wakefield Christchurch starting 1654-1790 is actually Castleford, All Saints there are no indications on the page as to the church name and the WYAS reference has been cut of the bottom. Only someone familiar with the place names of Castleford & Houghton would know that it is not WAKEFIELD. There are many more like this, where the images are linked to the wrong parishes. I checked out the example Gordon Dyson gives below, and the entry is indexed twice, once under St Peter's Sowerby and once under St John's Royston. So you can find the real information - even the indexation of the Royston one says Sowerby. BUT the Sowerby set of images is 5 pages long, and is all from Sowerby. The Royston set is 10 pages long, and changes to Sowerby at page 7. So someone has provided a set which is already muddled. To make things more diffcult to understand, the WYAS labelling at the foot of the image disappears at page 7, so I can't tell what the labelling is for the Sowerby pages. Two things are clear to me: we should ask Wakefield what they think has happened. And we should always use the images not the record. I think there was a time when parents were charged a small fee to have children baptized, so many poor parents just didn't have it done. Later, when that fee was cancelled, they had the lot done at once. Not sure though, of the time period when this happened. Just a suggestion.. I have found the same in the Borders of Scotland. Linton and Lilliesleaf seem to be duplicated for the very early baptisms. Sounds like exactly the same problem so please reply to the list if you know the answer. It doesn't make a lot of sense and I am wondering if it is a mistake. I just saw one in the London registers on Ancestry [St. Michael Bassishaw] that duplicated the same parish. The handwriting was different and the entries were arranged differently on the pages so it wasn't a matter of two copies nor of BTs. I thought I was seeing things. Ironically, on one of them the mother's name Judith was crossed out and a different name, Elizabeth, written in [which didn't help either as the father had wives with both names]. Otherwise, the dates were identical. Liane
In the Parish Registers recently appearing on Ancestry, it seems as though there are literally dozens of Christening entries throughout the 1720s and 1730s which are exactly duplicated under both St. Peter's, Sowerby and St. John's, Royston. Can anyone suggest what, if anything, these two separate churches in two distinct Parishes could possibly have had to do with each other's records, and which of them would have been the actual and correct place of the events?
Hi Gordon and all who replied so helpfully, Many thanks for all your inputs, I've sent the image on to Gordon separately, but some of you found it.One suggestion is that Nanny's middle name is Hils - it does read like that, and I wonder if anyone has come across this as a female name before? I haven't, except as a nickname for Hilary. I love the birth suggestion you give below, Gordon. Previously I had found one in Illingworth five years later, same father, and was wondering if this could be a late baptism. The answer is clearly yes! I do wonder whether they thought the first one hadn't "taken". Nanny and John only had 2 known children, but her son had a son he named Nathan, so to me this is pretty good evidence the suggestion is right. I continue to wonder about John Thomas "Junr", despite most people reading it as that. My reservation is not because it was only an American usage: it was common in England too where father and son had the same name and both were alive together. But it wasn't part of the name as it is in the US, just a handy extra label when dealing with officials. No, it's because the only birth record I find for John is to a father William, and this implies there would have been no need for the label. Does the first letter look like the J in John? I can't be sure. Any additional thoughts are welcome! Thank you all so much for your help Maggie -----Original Message----- From: gordon dyson <gordon.dyson@gmail.com> To: west-riding@rootsweb.com Sent: Mon, 4 Jul 2011 22:36 Subject: Re: [WRY] Halifax fiche marriages 'ello, Maggie, I have Fiche for this period ........ And it does say soething like Junr but I don't know that I'm convinced yet. However, a) the banns entry 1645 shows Nanny as a spinster b) there really is a middle word in her name, I can see it. I'll send the image from ancestry this evening, in a rush today to get to the probate office. many thanks Maggie

However, the date for record 558 is 20th AUGUST 1822 (Not October) and notes are given are : The name is John Thomas, but in the signature, it seems to say John Thomas "Jun" There is NO middle name listed for Nanny Isles, but a "note" gives the info. that this is the only record in this volume, where the Bride is not shown as either Spinster or Widow. In my IGI, there is a Baptism of a Nancy ISLES, d/o Nathan ISLES, 12 Mar 1797 at Halifax Square Chapel. Regards, Gordon. Nanny signs rather than makes a mark and includes in her signature a middle name, which I cannot make out (I've been using the new Ancestry West Yorkshire Parish Records). Maggie, Again, from IGI, it looks as if Nathan ISLES, married Elizabeth MIDGLEY. 19 May 1790 at Halifac P.C. Gordon.
