A Digest is a collection of posts on various Subjects and various members of that list. Perhaps if Digest registered members change the Subject line to reflect the Post they are replying to it would enable other members to understand what/who they are replying to. The post above is a good example. 3. The end of active Rootsweb Mailing Lists has been on the cards for a long time now, due to declining activity. I reckon Rootsweb Message Boards will follow suit - they too seem to be very quiet if not near moribund these days. I first subscribed to Rootsweb around 1999, shortly (I think) after it started. It was instrumental in my research and I shall regret its demise, but times have moved on. From where I stand, for the UK at least, Rootsweb has been replaced by Rootschat for some years now. It's perfectly usable, being essentially Message Boards like Rootsweb's plus a notification function (like Rootsweb's Gateway function before that died a death), and is much more active than Rootsweb. It's probably the main reason UK-related activity on Rootsweb has declined. I can't see the justification in reinventing the wheel - the 300 people who emailed, most presumably having a mainly watching brief on Rootsweb might as well have a watching brief on Rootschat instead, if they haven't already. I subscribe to a couple of groups on groups.io (nothing to do with genealogy) which were migrated from yahoo! groups in 2019. groups.io works perfectly well, and by all accounts the migration was straightforward and error free, so I wouldn't have any technical worries about going in that direction for any UK Mailing List. But I'm not in support of a plethora of forums addressing the same subject. Indeed, I subscribe to Rootsweb Bradford List and Halifax List but to me they're already fully superseded by the West Yorkshire List. One will do thanks! More than one is just overhead. These days if I want to post something, I now use RootsChat exclusively. Facebook has been mentioned. Personally I wouldn't go near it. Just saying, not discussing! Howard

I've logged on today to nearly 300 messages concerning my setting up a new mailing list to take over from Rootsweb I did originally consider Facebook but many would be unhappy to use it for genealogy or don't have a Facebook account. groups.io was suggested so I investigated and that does seem to fit the bill (the only downside is the free account has 1GB of storage; have no idea how long that lasts and what is done when the limit is reached. I shall not be paying to upgrade!! (I've Scottish blood in my veins as well as Yorkshire :) With this in mind I have set up another two groups -  one to replace the North Yorkshire list I administer: https://groups.io/g/North-Yorkshire-gen and the other to replace the West Riding list which I also administer https://groups.io/g/West-Riding-gen Yorksgen I think will replace the current Yorksgen list and also incorporate Eng-yorkshire and Eng-Yks-York https://groups.io/g/yorksgen I thought it best to do this now rather than months down the line. If you have subscribed to Yorksgen (https://groups.io/g/yorksgen) and you wish to leave and subscribe to one of the others please do so ( it is easy to do). It's going to take me some time to get through all the emails, so please bear with me. If you have asked me to add you to the group it would help enormously if you could join by using one of the three links (or all three if you have interests in all areas). Finally many thanks to those of you who are supporting me in this. Lin Duke

    3. Hello Lin Not sure how these new groups work and I am not a great fan of Facebook, I am sorry to say, but I have signed up to the yorksgen.groups.io site and will see whether I can get on with this. My family history research has lead me to South Yorkshire and that is why I placed my name on the list. I have also found relatives in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire as well as Wales and Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and America, but have yet to obtain a full amount of certificates to confirm my findings, as I have only just joined Ancestry. I feel it is a long journey and so I put my name down on the above areas to help me with any brick walls as I am sure I will find many along my journey path in my family research. I know I speak on behalf of a lot of people when I say 'Thank you to everyone on the list for all the help and assistance they have given us along our family history research paths, it is very much appreciated'. I hope you can please keep-up your good work on the groups.io website as well. Take care. Kind regards. I'm considering forming a facebook group to cover the Yorkshire lists I admin and am gauging your opinions as to whether that would be of interest. If so please email me directly (NOT to the lists). Thank you. Lin Duke soon to be ex-administrator > Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. 3. Other lists I belong to are wondering where to move. How much does Groups.io charge and if you stop paying, what happens to the list?
