Thanks so much for your reference. Do you have any idea where I could find/buy a copy of that book. I find this tombstone inscription very puzzling and would love to trace it to its origins. It seems to me that the data from Acushnet Cemetery has to be correct and the closest thing we have to a primary source. Anyone can replicate my search, both in the cemetery and the 1858 History of New Bedford which I quoted in an earlier letter. One has to assume that there is some sort of source for the assertion that Samuel West's tombstone had the inscription that you quoted. But one has to wonder what.
