    3. Barbara, Computers can crash in different ways depending on the problem. If a hard disk 'goes' it often, but not always, gives a warning -- strange sounds and intermittent errors -- at best. If a cpu stops working -- it just stops and stares back with a blank screen without blinking. If a memory chip goes bad, you will get failures and faults and error messages. Sometimes your operating system goes bad -- that is the easiest. You can reload your operating system. The bottom line is you know you've crashed because it just stops doing what it does so well -- work. If your hard disk stops working you probably, but not always, have lost all your data -- unless you back up, back up, back up. Not just one back up disk, but several backed up on a rotating basis. Some folks use zip drives because they hold more. I now use CD-R disks -- it just take a few minutes to back everything up on a couple of CD roms. I also am attached to a network here at home and another at work. So periodically (once a week), I move files to another computer on each network. Each week I have my updated files on CD disks and two computers in separate cities. Am I paranoid? Oh, yes. I had a computer crash on me -- a hard drive went bad with little warning. And that (for me) is the short answer. Allen Rev. E. 3. Allen: You are indeed a fountain of info. Thank you for taking the time to explain it so well and so fully. You have succeeded in scaring me to death....and right into the computer store for a CD burner. Your message should be published on every group. 3. Dear Barb, I didn't mean to scare you. I've been computing since the early 70's or so and have had only 1 true failure (I've had 2 'stupid' failures directly attributable to my own actions) in all that time over many, many, computers. When it does happen however, you will remember it. It's always nice to protect yourself . . . at least that's what I learned long ago on the school bus :)> Allen Rev. E.
