    1. Re: [WEST-L] ETHNICITY of the WEST NAME
    2. I too am a West descendant, but when we were in grade school and the teachers ask us to bring our family history to school and what nationality we were, my sister, just older than me told us to go to school and tell them we were Black Dutch. My mother just laughed and didn't tell us any thing but Scotch Irish. Now I am trying to locaate the West families I am related to and it is so hard finding back further than Elihew West and Eleanor Moss West. My Great Grandfather is George W. West so if any of you can help me with that family or further I would appreciate it. I did through some of the relatives help find Eli and Eleanor West in Texas later on and was so grateful to her for that. They sure did go from state to state back then not to have much transportation like we have now. Or maybe they had more than we thought/ ew

    2. Everytime we travel through the town of George West, Texas, I wonder if they are my kin. I have always found this interesting, and maybe y'all know about this, but it could be helpful to someone. ..Ginger West-Wagner Homestead Marker Location: 8 miles south of Hallettsville on US 77; 0.5 miles north on CR 312; 0.4 miles west on Wagner Ranch Marker Text: Washington West and his wife Mary Willauer West moved their family from Tennessee in 1854 and settled in Lavaca County, Texas. Their home became a stagecoach stop which developed into the community of Old Sweet Home. The Wests' sons George, Ike and Sol drove longhorn cattle to markets in Kansas, Nebraska, the Dakotas, Montana and Wyoming from 1867-85. George married Catherine (Kittie) Searcy in 1874, and in 1875 built this Greek revival style home on family land. George West's ranching interests expanded to several south Texas counties. They moved to Live Oak County in 1880 and later established the town of George West on a portion of their 200,000 acre ranch. In 1883 George and Kittie West sold the Lavaca County homestead to Ike and Emma West, who sold it in 1891 to Frank and Anna Wagner. Natives of Czechoslovakia, the Wagners had lived at the West homestead doing ranch and farm work. Here they reared their six children, Frank Jr., Jim, John, Anton, Joe and Mary. In 1918 Frank and Anna Wagner deeded the homestead to their youngest son, Anton Wagner. His brother and sister, Joe and Mary, lived in the house until the 1950s. The West-Wagner homestead remains in the Wagner Family. (1997) Information excerpted from Texas Historic Sites Atlas (on line) located at: http://atlas.thc.state.tx.us/Atlas/atlas_search_frame.html

    3. This one caught my eye real quick. Was your James Madison West born in Ohio or did he move there? What was his date of birth? His wife's name, etc? I descend from a James Madison West, b. Aug 1818 in TN and think he was married twice and the wife I descend from was Amanda Jane Ragsdale, b. abt. Oct 1850 in GA/AL and they were married in Hardeman Co., TN Dec 1866 and later moved to Holly Springs, Marshall Co., MS where they lived and died. According to the censuses from 1870-1910 James says his parents were born in MD. Does any of this sound familiar?
