We are WEST descendants, born of Manning-Kendrick line in WA. My grandmother, Pirley 'Pearl' Andrew (West) Manning, is where our West line starts. Her father was James Madison WEST, b. Aug 1818 in TN and died bef. 1920 in Marshall Co., MS. I have two family members with RH-negative blood, my older sister in CA and a niece in WA. My question is will that help in finding our West connection better? I have been told there could be indian in one of my lines, Manning or West or Ragsdale. We have for the most part high cheek bones as well. I have an uncle, Hugh West Manning, that really looks like he could be of indian blood. Hello Edith (Kendrick) Gomez: I saw your recent letter to the West List, and your TN/MS connection caught my eye. My name is Joe West, and my oldest known ancestor was William Berry West, born 1822 in Tennessee, and died about 1887 in Marshall County, Mississippi. This timing and location relates very closely to your ancestor James West, who you say was born 1818 in TN and died around 1920 in Marshall County, Mississippi. Do you know where in TN your James West was born, and do you know the names of his parents or any of his siblings? In the 1880 census, my William Berry West indicated that both of his parents were born in North Carolina, but we do not know where in NC, or their names. My William Berry West and his first wife Mary Polly Swain had 12 children, but only 3 of the children were boys. The boys names were John Thomas West, Andrew Claude West, and Jesse Berry West. I have been through the West DNA process, and had no significant matches. I did have a couple of matches with the first 12 markers, but when that was extended to 25 and then to 37 markers there were significant differences, indicating that any relationship, if any, might be many hundred years back. Your name seems familiar, so we might have corresponded before. However, I write to so many people I can't keep up with them all. Thanks for your help. I don't have any of the crooked little fingers or scooped out teeth that so much has been written about in the list lately. And my blood type is O Positive. Hello Kim West: Thank you for your response to my earlier letter. You indicated something about Wests and Swains and Berry's in the Tyrrell County, N.C. Area. Unfortunately, I really don't have any clues as to where in N.C. to look for my West ancestors. William Berry West and Mary Polly Swain were already married and had children at the time of the 1850 Census in MS. At the time of that census, William Berry indicated that he was born in Tennessee, and Mary indicated she was born in Georgia. Mary died in 1868, but William Berry West was still living at the time of the 1880 census, when the question was asked as to "where were your parents born?" William Berry West indicated that both his parents were born in N.C. The fact that his middle name was Berry and the fact that he named a son Jesse Berry, would tend to indicate there might be a family connection to the Berrys, but we have no other record of that. We have had good success in tracing the Swain family back several generations, from Mississippi to Georgia, and before that, S.C. However, we have had no luck at all with the West family. In the 1850 census in MS, William Berry West and Mary Polly Swain were enumerated on the page between the famiies of Mary's parents, John and Lucinda Swain, and the family of "Thomas West and his wife Francis." Ideally, one might think that this Thomas West and Francis were William Berry's parents, but we cannot make the connection. Thomas died a year later in 1851, and according to the county records, a will was probated. However, the actual will itself, and its contents, were apparently destroyed in a court house fire during the Civil War. Thomas and Francis were both born in N.C., so they seem to be our best hope, but no proof. The name Thomas has continued in our family line, but Francis does not appear anywhere. I would appreciate receiving any information you might have that could possibly connect with this family. As I mentioned earlier, I went through the DNA testing, but with no matches so far.
