    1. [WEST-L] Yellow Rose of Texas
    2. The current History Forum at the Alamo Library on the Alamo Grounds brought news that should be shared with West researcher. Emily Morgan, the Yellow Rose of Texas, has always been a heroine in Texas History and has been honored for her role in winning independence. For those not fortunate enough to be born in Texas, I will review the story. It has been believed that Emily Morgan, a beautiful slave owned by the Morgan family, was in Santa Anna's tent, distracting the little general at the time when the Texas attacked and won at the Battle of San Jacinto under the command of General Sam Houston. According to the historians speaking last week at the Alamo, there is now proof that Emily was not a slave. She was a woman of multi=racial heritage, but she was not a slave. She was an indentured servant with a contract to work for the Morgan family. Apparently, the actual contract has been found. And now the most interesting part for the West list. She worked for the Morgan family, but her name was Emily West and she was from New York. She had traveled with Lorenzo de Zavalla's wife and family from New York to Texas and after San Jacinto, she returned to New York. Again, she traveled with the deZavalla family. Travel was up the Miss, then the Ohio to Wheeling and then stage coach on to New York. If you need more information about these new finding, contact the Alamo Library and ask about the speakers at the forum. They can give you book titles that will help if you want to know more. I just thought that Wests everywhere ought to know that The Yellow Rose of Texas was really a West. Marti McLain McValliant@aol.com
