The Cherokees were required to go to Oklahoma if they wanted to receive benefits. Many Cherokees did not go, as they already owned land where they were and were satisfied with what they had. Others went to other states, Texas, for example. The same is true of members of the other Indian tribes which were settled in Indian Territory -- some went, some did not. This is one of the reasons why many of Indian descent do not appear on the various Indian rolls: they did not migrate with the tribe. An additional complexity is that Indian Territory at one time included parts of Arkansas -- the boundaries moved as time progressed. My husband's great great grandmother was of Cherokee descent, born in Indian Territory when it included parts of Arkansas. She was never on the Rolls, although she did go eventually to Oklahoma.
