Hi Cousin Edith, Most of my family were born in Hawkins County, Tennessee. My line is John WEST b. abt. 1812, don't know where, married Lavina (Vina) MYERS b. abt. 1817 in TN, (TN archives could find no record of their marriage). Their children were: James born Sept. 16, 1836, d. August 19, 1923 in Morristown, TN. James was my great grandfather. The other children were: Amos b. 1837; Lydia b. 1839; John b. 1841; Elizabeth b. 1843; William b. 1846; and George b. 1848. Not sure how accurate these dates are. Still doing a lot of research. James married Sarah (Sallie) SCARBROUGH (SCARBER) b. abt. 1830 in NC and d. in TN. Also sent for their marriage record in TN and none could be found. Her Mother was Winney SCARBROUGH. Their children were: Florence, not sure where we got her because I can't find her in any census I have, John Andrew b. 1856 d. in Dayton, Ohio; William b. 1858; James Hezekiah b. 1860; Sarah b. 1863; Vina b. 1868; Lydia b. May 1870 and my Grandpa George Washington WEST born June 14, 1871 I think, in Bulls Gap, TN, Hawkins county, d. December 1, 1943 in Wheeling, Indiana, Carroll county. James served in the First TN CAV. for the Union Army. He is buried in Providence Cemetery beside his brother William who fought for the Confederates. He left his family because as he says in his pension papers, "I was accused of some trouble", and he assumed the name of James Richards and lived in Allen County KY with a new wife, Susan GADDIS, b. May 1851 in TN. They had 2 children, Sallie RICHARDS b. Feb. 1880 in KY who married Joseph HYDE b. Aug. 1870 in KY and Cleveland b. Sept. 1884 in KY. At least they are listed as their children in the census. James is listed as a widower in 1923 when he dies after being hit by a train. James lived off and on at the Soldiers Home in Johnson City, TN. George married (Catherine) Elizabeth EVERHART, Feb. 19, 1894, in Hawkins CO, TN and their first 7 children were born in Hawkins county TN up until my Dad, (Otis) Lawrence, and then last 4 were born in NC where they moved in about 1914. They moved to IN in 1929. One married daughter remained in NC. Does this match with anybody? Phyllis WEST Parsons in Indiana
