At the battle of Bentonville (N.C.), he rallied his regiment as it faltered and later commanded the Union forces during the last part of the fighting. Died 1896. WEST, George Warren, Union officer. Mass. Capt. 10th Me. 26 Oct. '61; Maj.. 17th Me. 31 July '62; Col. 22 Oct. '63; Bvt. B.G. USV 2 Dec. '64 (war service, Wilderness). Commanded in the Army of the Potomac; 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, III Corps; 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division, II Corps; 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, II Corps, 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, II Corps. Died 1899. WEST, Henry Rienza, Union officer. Ohio. 2d Lt. 62d Ohio 3 Oct. '61; 1st Lt. 18 Dec. '61; Capt. 18 Sept. '62; Lt. Col. 13 Dec. '64; transferred to 67th Ohio 1 Sept. '65; Bvt. B.G. USV 13 July '65. Brevets for Fort Gregg (Va.), war service. Commanded 1st Brigade, 1st Division, XXIV Corps (Va.). W.I.A. at Fort Wagner, Deep Run, and Rice Station. WEST, Joseph Rodman, Union gen. 1822-98, La. After fighting in the Mexican War he was in business in Calif. and was named Lt. Col. 1st Calif. 5 Aug. '61 and Col. 1 June '62. That summer he was in the Calif. column that marched from San Pedro to the Rio Grande to recapture N. Mex. Promoted B.G. USV 25 Oct. '62, he commanded 2d Div., VII Corps (25 Apr.-16 June '64); Cav. Div., VII Corps (15 Sept. '64-18 Mar '65) in the Dept. of Ark. and 1st Brigade, 1st Division, Cav. (14 Apr.-15 May '65) and 2d Div., Cav. Corps (15 May-12 June '65) in the Gulf. Breveted Maj. Gen. USV in 1866 for war service, he was mustered out that year to become a public official and US (Republican) Sen. from La. He then went to Washington, where he held public offices.
