Dear Researchers, I am descended from Amos West (1766-1819), who was born in Green Springs, Louisa County, Virginia. Amos, as some of you are already aware, was the brother of William (1752-1842) and Leonard West (1760-1842), the ancestors of three other West-L subscribers. Following the unexpected deaths of his parents, Amos was reared in Orange County, North Carolina, by his maiden aunt, Miss Lucy Fike. As family tradition documents, Amos was a Revolutionary War soldier during the war's latter years. No proof of this service has been located, for he passed away prior to receiving the opportunity to apply for a pension. He married Frances Herndon, eldest daughter of James Herndon and Isabella Thompson, enroute to Logan County, Kentucky, on April 2, 1791. (The exact marriage location was Sumner County, Tennessee.) They became the parents of the following children: i. MARY "POLLY" WEST, b. December 28, 1791, Gallatin, Sumner County, Tennessee; d. March 06, 1851, Sulphur Spring, Simpson County, Kentucky; m. WILLIAM MILLIKEN, son of GEORGE MILLIKEN and AGNESS WEST, August 09, 1808, Logan County, Kentucky. ii. LEONARD E. WEST, b. 1796, Logan County, Kentucky; d. Bef. 1870, Graves County, Kentucky; m. MARGARET DOSS, Abt. 1822, Illinois. iii. ISABELLA WEST, b. May 25, 1798, Logan County, Kentucky; d. October 16, 1843, Logan County, Kentucky; m. HIRAM H. HALCOMB, son of GEORGE HALCOMB and SARAH HENDERSON, January 18, 1813, Logan County, Kentucky. iv. AGNESS WEST, b. January 10, 1800, Logan County, Kentucky; d. June 06, 1871, Clear Springs, Graves County, Kentucky; m. JOHN P. BUSH, son of WILLIAM BUSH AND NANCY ??? March 21, 1822, Logan County, Kentucky. v. JAMES HERNDON WEST, b. 1803, Logan County, Kentucky; d. January 14, 1858, Simpson County, Kentucky; m. JANE BABB, daughter of ALSTON BABB AND JANE HAMILTON, March 18, 1834, Robertson County, Tennessee. vi. RICHARD WEST*, b. January 06, 1806, Logan County, Kentucky; d. March 04, 1841, Logan County, Kentucky; m. AMY WILLIAMSON, daughter of CHRISTOPHER WILLIAMSON, Abt. 1826, Bruton Parish Church, Williamsburg, Virginia. * I am descended from Richard. Does anyone have any further information on Amos's ancestry? I have have inquired of this to all subscribers several times before, yet am reposting this in light of the recent roll call. I have discovered evidence that a Joseph Matthew West is somehow related to my Richard West family. Many of my correspondents in the past proposed theories that several Matthew Wests of Logan and Simpson Counties, Kentucky, were related to Amos, Leonard, and William West. While I am far from locating proof, I have amassed a significant addition to our theories. This Joseph Matthew West (1777-1859) was the son of Joseph Milton West and Sarah Eliza Bush. (I might mention that Milton was a popular middle name among William West's descendants.) This Joseph Milton was born before or around 1757, making him a wonderful candidate to be a distant cousin, an uncle, or in more unusual cases a brother to Amos West. This is merely hypothesizing, though. I will be making attempts to verify the claims of a relationship between this family and mine. Might anyone happen to have information on Joseph Milton's family? For those interested, I will be more than willing to expound upon what is written here. Ben West bmwest@usit.net P. S. It is believed that Joseph Milton migrated from North Carolina, probably near Granville County, to the Alabama Territory prior to 1777. A recent source I located claims that Margaret Murrah West, Joseph Matthew West's wife, had a sister-in-law named Amy Williamson West. Whether this relationship is on the Murrah side or the West side, I am uncertain. If this statement was made in regards to the West family, then there would be certain flaws in this proposed relationship. Perhaps the exact kinship was misunderstood.
