Dear Dale, Here is a bibliography for my line of WESTs: _______, History of Franklin and Pickaway Counties, Ohio, with Illustrations and Biographical Sketches, (n.p. Williams Bros. Publishers, 1880), 325-326. (A copy is located in the Iowa Historical Library, Iowa City, IA.) "George West came from Virginia about 1804, and bought about nine hundred acres of the Butler survey, in the southeast part of the township and on the Scioto River. He had eleven children, of whom nine came to maturity. They were: Daniel [my line, pmf]; Peter; Frederick; John; George; Elizabeth; Mary; Sarah; Barbara; Margaret, and Catharine. George died young; Frederick went into the army and served in the War of 1812, came home broken down in health and died. On the death of Mr. West the property was divided between the children, each receiving one hundred acres. Seven made improvements, and two sold to the others. Daniel died in 1861, in Harrison township, and Margaret in Jackson. The rest, with the exception of Peter, went West, where they died. George West died in 1824." [Same reference and page} "Peter West came from Virginia in 1804, at the same time as his father's family. He remained on the east side of the river about five years, and in 1809 settled on one hundred acres belonging to his father, in Scioto township. He married Elizabeth Bartley, and had seven children, of whom five are now living. Mary married John Seaburn; Sarah married Mason Cleveland; John married Elizabeth Howe, and lives a widower, in Iowa; Elizabeth married Luke Wilkins, and lives in the township; Margaret married J.W. Stiverson, and lives on the Peter West homestead. Mr. West died April 6, 1840, aged fifty-eight. His wife, Elizabeth, died June 1, 1850, aged seventy- two." [Same reference, 326] "Mrs. Stiverson was the sixth and youngest child of Peter West and Elizabeth Bartly [sic]. Her father was a native of Virginia, and was born February 8, 1782. Her mother was a native of Pennsylvania, and was born September 12, 1778. Her parents came to Ohio in 1804, and settled on the Scioto River, where the Stiverson family now resides. Her father [Peter West, pmf] built and operated a large ferry boat, for several years, and Miss Margaret West--now Mrs. Stiverson--was his only helper much of the time, and she soon understood the management of the awkward craft as well as her father... She is a member of the Christian church." William West, a son of the above Daniel West, moved his family from Pickaway Co., Ohio, to Decatur Co., Iowa, ca. 1852. The following is a sketch about him: _______, Biographical and Historical Record of Ringgold and Decatur Counties, Iowa, (Chicago: Lewis Publishing Co., 1887), 699. (Also located in the Iowa Historical Library, Iowa City, Iowa.) "William West, deceased, was born in Ohio in 1817, a son of Daniel and Mary West, natives of Virginia. He was reared on a farm, and in 1843 was married, near Columbus, Ohio, to Elizabeth Robinson, a native of Ohio, born in 1822, a daughter of Isaac and Ann (Humes) Robinson, natives of Pennsylvania. Their living children are--Charles of Decatur County; Hamilton of Nebraska; Mrs. Ann M. Pierce [sic, should be Fierce, my maternal gr grandmother], of Iowa; Allen and John of Nebraska; Elmina, wife of Albert Hubbard of Nebraska; Jefferson N. and Isaac. The deceased children are--Daniel; Mary; Martin L. and Lincoln. Mr. and Mrs. West came to Decatur County, Iowa, in 1854. They commenced life poor, but were industrious and economical, and at his death Mr. West left an estate of 900 acres. Mrs. West owns 230 acres of this land, eighty acres of which are under cultivation. She is an estimable woman, a good manager, and has charge of her farm, the work being done by hired help. In politics, Mr. West was a Republican. He held the office of assessor, and also several school offices. He was a member of the Grange Order, an organization in which he was much interested. Mrs. West's postoffice address is DeKalb." [DeKalb is not longer in existence in Decatur Co., IA, pmf] Thanks so much for posting the above on your web site. I appreciate it. While in Pickaway Co., Ohio, my Wests had as their minister, the Reverend Joseph A. Roof. "Church Records of Reverend Joseph A. Roof, 1800-1890, Pickaway Co., Ohio, (Transcribed) Microfilm No. 0223893, Family History Library, Salt Lake. "Rev. Roof assumed the ministry of the Lutheran (Reformed) Church, Pickaway Co. 1834, remained until 1855. During this time he removed to Van Buren Co., Iowa, also preached at Lee Co., Iowa. He returned to Ohio from Iowa on 13 August 1860, after spending five years, four months in Iowa.... He was in Circleville, Pickaway Co., Ohio from 1835-1855..." [Comment: Perhaps some of the Wests followed Rev. Roof to Iowa and remained there, pmf]
