    2. Hi, I would also like the West line that you have. I have West's starting in Massachusetts and then to Nova Scotia and then back to Massachusetts. _SonAnnVerr@aol.com_ (mailto:SonAnnVerr@aol.com) Sonia

    2. Joe West
    3. Hello Kim West: Thank you for your response to my earlier letter. You indicated something about Wests and Swains and Berry's in the Tyrrell County, N.C. Area. Unfortunately, I really don't have any clues as to where in N.C. to look for my West ancestors. William Berry West and Mary Polly Swain were already married and had children at the time of the 1850 Census in MS. At the time of that census, William Berry indicated that he was born in Tennessee, and Mary indicated she was born in Georgia. Mary died in 1868, but William Berry West was still living at the time of the 1880 census, when the question was asked as to "where were your parents born?" William Berry West indicated that both his parents were born in N.C. The fact that his middle name was Berry and the fact that he named a son Jesse Berry, would tend to indicate there might be a family connection to the Berrys, but we have no other record of that. We have had good success in tracing the Swain family back several generations, from Mississippi to Georgia, and before that, S.C. However, we have had no luck at all with the West family. In the 1850 census in MS, William Berry West and Mary Polly Swain were enumerated on the page between the famiies of Mary's parents, John and Lucinda Swain, and the family of "Thomas West and his wife Francis." Ideally, one might think that this Thomas West and Francis were William Berry's parents, but we cannot make the connection. Thomas died a year later in 1851, and according to the county records, a will was probated. However, the actual will itself, and its contents, were apparently destroyed in a court house fire during the Civil War. Thomas and Francis were both born in N.C., so they seem to be our best hope, but no proof. The name Thomas has continued in our family line, but Francis does not appear anywhere. I would appreciate receiving any information you might have that could possibly connect with this family. As I mentioned earlier, I went through the DNA testing, but with no matches so far. 2. Hi, Eva! I have suspected for years that he went to California for the Gold Rush and died there. His family stayed in Maine. I don't know where he lived or how/when he died. I would appreciate any help you could give me in adding to our information about him. He was also a sea captain/sailor for years. I have wondered if he transported a shipload of men to the Gold rush and decided to stay there himself. He could have also intentionally gone there in search of gold. Kathryn
