    3. I sent an answer rootsweb would not send to the list. Apparently you can't scan forms and send them on roots web. The web site you talked about is mine. I tried to follow the rootsweb address for that census too, it wasn't available. Anyway, Asserkus is not a name I ever heard of before, and I wondered if it was an Indian name. Her name in our language was Frances Bertha West Cramer. Her father was Philip Parker West, b 1803 Accomack Virginia, her mother was Vina Perlina Roberts b 1805-1807, PA but I have since seen another birth place mentioned, it might have been Tennessee. Mom didn't want to admit to German or Indian. "Asserkus" was her grandmother. But it didn't show their post it only took me to a page that was a transcript of the census. But I didn't find this name. I'm really curious too. Can you give me the direct link to this exact page on the census where you found this? I'd like to look at it myself too. :) Thanks. Barb n a message dated 4/13/2006 3:24:27 P.M. Vicki -----Original Message----- From: Mike Miller [mailto:mikemilr@blackfoot.net] Sent: Thursday, April 13, 2006 1:24 PM To: WEST-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [WEST-L] ETHNICITY of the WEST NAME My WEST line comes from Samuel WEST (m. Jane(t) Burnside), born 1759, place unknown, died 1844 in Huron, NY. His son, Calvin Brookins WEST, was born in Maryland, Otsego, NY in 1816, moved to Defiance, Ohio before 1844 and died at sea on the ship Sierra Nevada after contracting Chlolera in Panama in route to San Francisco -> Oregon with his family in 1855. CB WEST came to OR in the late 1840's and early 1850's and had a 9000 acre land grant near Roseburg, OR. After his death, his family settled there - the original land grant is still intact and, although no longer in the family, there is a museum located there dedicated to the Wests. I have CB Wests pencil written diaries of his travels in the OR territories. His daughter, Anna West (Webster) is my gggrandmother. The Burnsides fought in the revolutionary war - Jane(t)s father was born in Ireland - she was born in NY - one might speculate that if the Irish kept to themselves, Samuel West may have been a good Irish lad - obviously, there is no way to know for sure. mike ----- Original Message ----- From: Sandra To: WEST-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, April 13, 2006 10:36 AM Subject: [WEST-L] ETHNICITY of the WEST NAME I had posted this once before but would like lots of input. 3. I'm having a hard time finding the exact location of the museum - as I recall, it was about 7-8 miles east of Roseburg. There was a book published in 1961 (250 copies - I have two of them "somewhere") Publisher: The California History Foundation.. Stuart, Reginald R.; Stuart, Grace D. CALVIN B. WEST OF THE UMPQUA. AN OBSCURE CHAPTER IN THE HISTORY OF SOUTHERN OREGON. Stockton: 1961, One of 250 copies, The California History Foundation. Sorry I can't be of more help at present - I'll have to dig through some boxes of my grandparents old letters as I know they corresponded with the current land owners (current as of about 1980). A quick search of the Douglas County OR web page didn't find anything. mike ----- Original Message ----- From: "`Shirley" <SWB@Olympus.net> To: <WEST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, April 13, 2006 12:24 PM Subject: Re: [WEST-L] ETHNICITY of the WEST NAME > Can you be specific about the location of the West museum? 2. My Dad was blue eyed, red haired Irish. He had a very close resemblance to the actor, Spencer Tracy, even the facial expressions. His father, Ephram West, had a definite dislike of the English, reasons unknown to me. Earliest West family that I can trace, lived in Lafayette and Johnson County, Mo, in a close knit Irish community, according to the census. Most marriages were between Irish, among them, Campbell, McDowell, Davis, Hogan, and Pool. My g-grandfather Henry Clay West married Julia Pool (Poole), (her mother was a Hogan) and they are buried In Lafayette County Mo, in the Pool family cemetery on a farm that has been in the Pool family since 1833. My oldest living Pool relative is an elderly unmarried farmer, who still works this farm. This cemetery holds my oldest known roots. Henry Clay Wests father, James West born 1808 NC, married Elizabeth --unk.. born 1824, married ca. 1842, in Lafayette Co. MO. His headstone is leaning against a tree at the Pool cemetery, and we have not found any evidence of Elizabeths grave. The West line for me just stops flat, at James 1808 NC. Hope someone knows something more. ..Ginger ----- Original Message ----- From: Sandra To: WEST-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, April 13, 2006 11:36 AM Subject: [WEST-L] ETHNICITY of the WEST NAME I had posted this once before but would like lots of input.
