As far as I know my particular West's mother came from France. At least that is what most of the census say. But it doesn't say where her father came from or what her father's race was. I know that she m. a man we suspect was NA. We also have very dark people in our family with high cheekbones but most of us have either green or blue eyes. My oldest son has 'black' eyes though. We have shades of color in our family. My sister, father and my oldest son are all pretty dark. They can pass for NA, part black, part Spanish..or part anything else that is darker skinned. I got what the old slavers used to call 'hi yellow'.. I'm just a kind of yellow color. LOL My youngest sister is whiter than white. And my bro is a little darker than me. I have slanty eyes..almost oriental. In fact, the eye doc used to say, Barb, open your eyes.. I'd tell him that they already are. When my sister was in South Dakota and was sick with pneumonia she went to the NA authorities there and told them that we know we are Indian, but can't prove it with paperwork and they took one look at her and said, "You are definitely Indian.' So they treated her for her pneumonia. I tell you these West people of mine are so elusive. I only have my 2nd Great Grandmother Sarah Ann West. I don't even know her parents names. These Wests hide real good LOL But I am determined to find her and find out about her ancestors. I have a lot of info about her from the time se was married, but nothing about her parents or siblings. n a message dated 4/13/2006 4:41:13 P.M. I too am a West descendant, but when we were in grade school and the teachers ask us to bring our family history to school and what nationality we were, my sister, just older than me told us to go to school and tell them we were Black Dutch. My mother just laughed and didn't tell us any thing but Scotch Irish. Now I am trying to locaate the West families I am related to and it is so hard finding back further than Elihew West and Eleanor Moss West. My Great Grandfather is George W. West so if any of you can help me with that family or further I would appreciate it. I did through some of the relatives help find Eli and Eleanor West in Texas later on and was so grateful to her for that. They sure did go from state to state back then not to have much transportation like we have now. Or maybe they had more than we thought/ ew
Everytime we travel through the town of George West, Texas, I wonder if they are my kin. I have always found this interesting, and maybe y'all know about this, but it could be helpful to someone. ..Ginger West-Wagner Homestead Marker Location: 8 miles south of Hallettsville on US 77; 0.5 miles north on CR 312; 0.4 miles west on Wagner Ranch Marker Text: Washington West and his wife Mary Willauer West moved their family from Tennessee in 1854 and settled in Lavaca County, Texas. Their home became a stagecoach stop which developed into the community of Old Sweet Home. The Wests' sons George, Ike and Sol drove longhorn cattle to markets in Kansas, Nebraska, the Dakotas, Montana and Wyoming from 1867-85. George married Catherine (Kittie) Searcy in 1874, and in 1875 built this Greek revival style home on family land. George West's ranching interests expanded to several south Texas counties. They moved to Live Oak County in 1880 and later established the town of George West on a portion of their 200,000 acre ranch. In 1883 George and Kittie West sold the Lavaca County homestead to Ike and Emma West, who sold it in 1891 to Frank and Anna Wagner. Natives of Czechoslovakia, the Wagners had lived at the West homestead doing ranch and farm work. Here they reared their six children, Frank Jr., Jim, John, Anton, Joe and Mary. In 1918 Frank and Anna Wagner deeded the homestead to their youngest son, Anton Wagner. His brother and sister, Joe and Mary, lived in the house until the 1950s. The West-Wagner homestead remains in the Wagner Family. (1997) Information excerpted from Texas Historic Sites Atlas (on line) located at: http://atlas.thc.state.tx.us/Atlas/atlas_search_frame.html

Maybe it just because its been such a long day but I looked at Asserkus and immediatly thought "A Circus". Not very helpful but sure struck me funny at the time. Is there more than one person on that census with that designation? Are you sure it was a nationality or was it perhaps a given name? I found a transcription online of the 1885 Dodge County, Nebraska census... For John CRAMER & Asserkus ?? It looks like it was perhaps a first name of the wife. Doesn't appear to have the nationality listed in the transcript. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nedodge/census/1885/C85DodgeCensus.htm Deb Karon wrote: >That is humorous to me as my mother was saying she was Pennsylvania Dutch to avoid being German. In the 1850 census it does not give her nationality. She was living with Frank and Lydia Hanna in Gilmer Illinois, Adams County in 1850 Her given name is Frances Bertha West. In the census you saw she was the wife of John K Cramer, every census I have found it is Frances, until the 1885 Nebraska State Census. Claire Mares typed that up, and she is the one who did a lot of research for me, because I live so far away from there. 1860 Census, Territory of Nebraska, she is called Frances, and it does not give any nationality. 1870 U S Fed Census, Nebraska Territory, Washington County, calls her Frances, says she is female, 32, born in Ohio, no nationality. 1880 U S Fed Census, Dodge co. Nebraska calls her Frances, says she was born in Ohio, her father was born in Canada and her mother born Ohio. No nationality given. She died in 1889. A circus is the only way I would know how to pronounce that name, and I have often thought that is funny. She was giving birth to babies in Nebraska at an early date. They had snow storms people died in, they had Indian raids, insect infestations that ate crops, times when it looked like starvation looked eminent. The 1870 census said she was insane. Who knows what they meant. She had lived through the death of her father at an early age, the death of a baby, all those hard times on the frontier. I have wondered if insanity was why she gave her name as Asserkus, I have wondered if today they would have a very different definition of her problem. No where to I get any direction on her nationality. There are a good number of redheads in the line. I think I have told you about all I can. My grandpa seemed to like his mother, he named his oldest daughter Frances Bertha. He said he ran away from home because his dad was mean to him. I don't know. That reminds me the census said she was insane about the time he was born, or a young child. Post Partum Blues? I don't know. Wish I did. Sometimes 'Black Dutch' was a term used for 'Native American'. I have heard debates on both sides of the fence who say it was a term for NA, and some who say it wasn't, that it meant something else. It could have had more than one meaning. :) But in my family it was a 'cover up' for Native American. barb In a message dated 4/13/2006 10:11:25 A.M. I don't know anything about it either. I googled the word 'Asserkus' to see if it was a surname or a tribe or whatever and only got one link to someone's post.
