    3. I agree with Jinny, Sandra, This is yours and Jeff's document to do with as you may wish. Once you and he make whatever decision it is that you may come to, I agree that the original researcher who put this together should be given the credit and the proper citations should be posted along with any kind of release of the work, especially if you put it up on a website. If you do go that route, you or he will want full control and should be the ones to post it to whichever place you decide to send it. I think that Jeff and you should be commended for putting together the research work, and I hope that you realize that your work is greatly appreciated. Also, regarding the questions of citations, both Rootsweb Review and Ancestry Newsletters have done a number of articles on the subject which are archived at their websites. Here is one of the articles which explains something about it: RootsWeb Review: RootsWeb's Weekly E-zine 29 March 2006, Vol. 9, No. 13 (c) 1998-2006 RootsWeb.com, Inc. http://www.rootsweb.com/ * * * In genealogy, most citations are to works that are in the public domain such as the factual material in an obituary or in a church registry. Such data is not subject to copyright and so only the CREATIVE text that is original with the author is copyrightable. (This entire article can be read at: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/review/2006/0329.txt and RootsWeb Review: RootsWeb's Weekly E-zine Vol. 6, No. 12, 19 March 2003, Circulation: 1,022,037+ (c) 1998-2003 RootsWeb.com, Inc. http://www.rootsweb.com/ Solving Source Problems Vicki Klein wrote in RWR last week regarding "Citing Sources" and if anyone has a solution to her online sources problem. I don't know if this the BEST solution, but here is something that I have adopted. If I personally am able to view and verify a documented source like a marriage register, obituary, etc., I will include the source including the actual text and some sort of relevant reference to where I located it. If I receive some personal information via e-mail or from a telephone conversation or letter, etc., then I use that info to fill out an FGR (Family Group Record). I then attribute the source of that FGR to the person from whom I received the information. I include the name of the person within the "Comments" section of the citation and I try to include the date as well. I keep their e-mail address and other contact information out of the actual source citation and include it in my address book. My sources then appear on WorldConnect as something like: Sources: 1. Title: Family Group Record Date: 2002 It is easy for me to find the originator of the information, but difficult for just anyone on the Internet. Should someone who is related e-mail me, I can then put them in contact with other cousins. But "LIVING" human sources aren't displayed on the Internet and people have to go through me personally to find out more. --Brad Donison bdonison@hotmail.com ========================================== There are other articles which can be viewed by going to this link: http://search-rwr.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/htsearch Deloris ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jinny Angelis" <jinnya@msn.com> To: <WEST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 30, 2006 7:27 PM Subject: Re: [WEST-L] Re:Search for a Rootsweb home for the West Document > Definitely! 3. Definitely! I remembered that you said that there was a relative involved in the preparation and you thought permission/credit was needed for him also. I think most people already have it that wanted it. I do think we need to have some guidance on the citation! You both need credit for preparing such a useful document and coming up with the "right" citation would go a long way to helping everyone know where it came from, particularly if there are questions down the road. Someone had done a "nice" job in referencing Jon Saunders database on Rootsweb. It looked pretty close to what I though it actually should be, mentioning the references that Saunders has used extensively for his own documentation. Maybe someone at Rootweb or the lds site, www.familysearch.org<http://www.familysearch.org/> can provide some guidance in this area. Worth a shot. I bet there are people on the list also who could lay out the citation also. Any takers? Worth a shot. Is Jeff a cousin or brother? As a pharmacist I would expect him to be pretty detail oriented and thorough! Let us know what you find. I'm not going to send this to Deloris. I think maybe you should do this once you talk to Jeff and decide... 3. Teresa Thanks for sending this on. It looks like a great place to start. There is a lot of info assembled here that would save a lot of time searching. The link to the NGS guidelines for publishing on the web is especially timely. I had forgotten about space from my ISP as I use MSN to handle my mail so I don't have to bother with outlook. Need to check that out. I bet most of us have free home pages available that we could have used for this document or others in the future. Below is a link to Cyndi's Genealogy Home Page Construction Kit, and if you scroll down on the page you will find links for various sites that offer free webspace. Many people already have free webspace available to them through their Internet provider, which is another option. http://www.cyndislist.com/construc.htm#Find<http://www.cyndislist.com/construc.htm#Find> --------------------------------- Yahoo! 2. Eva. I don't know if there is a connection with the two Silas West. But we have found relatives in TX. They descend from James West. b. 1798, SC. I know there was a Silas West in Gibson, TN. Has your family taken the DNA test yet? I found 5 new sets of cousin through the DNA Test. Of course, you need a West male to take the test. You might know this already. Please keep in touch, we were surprise and what we found out. Alice WEST Ferguson ... W53 WEST DNA PROJECT Descendant of Silas L. West, b. abt. 1832, NC

    3. I don't have the document at all. What you can do is go to their submission page for the Freepages where there are instructions on how to do it. I believe they accept either an email with attachments, or a direct download from your computer files. 3. Rootsweb does not have a place to put this unless we get some free space. It sounds like Deloris's offer would help us on Monday... So, Deloris, Sandra, & Karon --- do we have Deloris load the document up there and send out the address to the list? Deloris, do you have a copy of the document? If you want to put it out in multiple pieces, I have the 6 documents that I have been sending to those caught in the ISP situation. What about coming up with a standard citation for the source of this? Sandra, can you do that? I think you said you had a cousin or something who should get credit also. I think this is going to get me going and make my own free pages also. I keep putting it off. I have several pictures that might be of interest to a few people now or in the future. I'd like to get them out where others could see them. My goal for 2006! I would describe it as one of the book outputs from a genealogy program PLUS detailed analysis about one family line of interest with all the assumptions taken and reasons for these assumptions. Also includes snips from newspapers. I agree freepages is the likely place for something like this. I would think that a "list freepage" and then the associated last name would be useful for all of the lists to place similar types of documents as they come up. I know I have seen documents exchanged on other lists. Also, I think there was some info earlier on the West list related to the De laWare discussions and Francis West not being listed as a "Sir"... If you were "ready" to put your own info on the freepages this is a good example I think of the type of thing you would include. However, sometimes people are not ready to make that step and just want to share a something. I think other lists must have been through this before. I'll let the list know what I find out. Rootsweb takes all kinds of things at various databases they have subjects from A - Z, as long as it's genealogical, having to do with family history and such. Have you gone to their main homepage and requested a freepage? They will assign one to you where you can post your document, there are sites there that even consists of nothing but a page telling viewers what the names of their ancestors are that they are researching, it's that open to all kinds of formats. Here is the direct address to their Freepages Account request, click onto that link on this page and it gives you instructions and an address you can contact to get more info about it: http://accounts.rootsweb.com/<http://accounts.rootsweb.com/<http://accounts.rootsweb.com/<http://accounts.rootsweb.com/>> I, personally don't object to the requests for the documents on the mailing list, but I can see that it is causing a little conflict and don't want to see the list falling into something that becomes unpleasant. Besides, I do lots of lookup requests and can understand that sending out so many responses to the requests for documents at once can be very time consuming.
