Hi: In our family candied sweet potatoes have become a tradition. It came down from my grandma Doyle to my Dad John Doyle and to me. If I don't make them, I hear from my kids and grandkids. Since my husband is Italian, one year I thought I'd do italian. No one complained and they ate what was there, but--as Thanksgiving approached the next year, my Grandaughter, Jill let her thought be known. Grandma, please let's have a traditional Thanksgiving. So, I'm back to turkey, dressing, Sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, veggies and salad and rolls and of course pumpkin pie. This year we'll be 14 instead of our usual 23. They grow up and life changes. Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Rosie
We always have our traditional Thanksgiving and Christmas dishes. One dish is a green pea salad. It was a favorite of our very picky eater grandfather. It is made from green peas, diced delicious apples and diced American cheese, mixed with mayonaisse. He was about the only one who ate it except me. I love it. Of course the younger generations won't touch it with a ten foot pole, but they insist that it be on the table because it was Grandpaw's favorite holiday dish, even though he died before most of them were born. He died in 1976 at the age of 87.
Does anyone have information on an Anne WEST or her father Thomas WEST. I have no dates or places of birth on these two, but Anne was married to John AYLOFFE of Hornchurch, Essex, Eng and their son Thomas AYLOFFE was b. in 1433. I am looking for the ancestry of Thomas West, who the mother of Anne WEST was and any dates or biographical information. Thanks in advance. Cheers, Leslie <lhauck@efn.org>
I want to say a great big thank you to each and every one of you for your support in the closing of our list. The "vote" was almost unanimious to keep the list closed, so we will do so for the time being. Your kind and encouraging words were a great pick-me-up. The concensus is that if anyone is interested in researching our surname, they can join the list. I think most of the surname lists are now closed. We were bombarded with spam today, and because we have a wonderful spam detective and a closed list, we were spared. Now, for something a little more lighthearted. Most of us are so busy just now getting ready for the holidays we won't have time for serious research. I thought that maybe we could share a little during this season, and it really doesn't stray too much from genealogy. I know each family has some holiday traditions that have roots in past decades. Perhaps it is an anecdote that is told at each gathering, a favorite receipe, or any other holiday traditions. Type HOLIDAY TRADITION in the subject line so that anyone who is not interested can just hit the delete button. Who knows, we might find some similar traditions that would tie our families together. God Bless, Myra
Seeking info on a Thomas Conley WEST who was in Erath Co., TX in 1880. He married Sarah Susan WEBB in 1882 in Erath Co. He was born about 1863, place unknown. Sarah Susan was b. Aug 1865 in Pettis Co., MO and came to TX between 1870 & 1875. Thomas and Sarah had at least 10 children, all born in TX, probably in Erath Co. He probably worked in the mines in Thurber, TX at that time. About 1908 they were in Nolan Co., TX. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
I just received this wonderful information from the secretary of the WCGO, Inc in Wayne Co., MS. The following article was published in the 1930's and found in the WPA Historical Research Files, Wayne County, MS. "Wayne County History Formation" "John WEST came to Wayne County from South Carolina about 1828 or 1830. He married Miss Nellie ODOM, a daughter of Malachai ODOM. He settled and established a home on Cold Water Creek, six miles East of Waynesboro. He brought his father Vincent WEST with him. Their graves, father and son, are on the left bank of Cold Water Creek, one fourth mile above the present mill site. One-fourth mile down the creek from the public road can be found the foundation of the first mill built by him more than a hundred years ago. John WEST was a member of the legislature for a number of years prior to 1860. He was against Secession, but he sent four sons to the Confederate Army." "William WEST is buried on the Battlefield of Gettysburg. Archie WEST near Manassas. John and Tom WEST returned. Tom was for years a member of the Mississippi conference." ( I think this means Methodist.) "John WEST and Vincent WEST, a younger son, with Mrs. Annie WEST POWE (a daughter) moved to Texas soon after the Civil War." I beleive that John, his father Vincent may have also come to MS with brothers Archibald, Willis & Thomas in the early 1830's to Wayne County. John states on 1850 census that he was born in North Carolina. I have found a Vincent WEST in Cumberland County, North Carolina on the 1810 and 1820 census. Will research this more in the future. I thought this to be good information on the the WEST family in Wayne Co., MS so I decided it should be shared. > FYI -- My husband descends from the 2nd John WEST who fought in the Civil War and moved to Uvalde Co., Texas and later became the Judge of the newly formed Zavalla County, Texas. Then from his son Dr. Archibald Kelly WEST who was the mayor of Smithville, Texas (the movie "Hope Floats" filmed there) at the turn of the century. He later helped established the University of Oklahoma Medical School. His son Maury was the father of my husband's father. Hope this information is helpful to others. Ever Searching, Judy ROBSOB WEST in Texas

The problem with returning to sender gives the attacker more addresses. That is one reason that spammers ask people to reply directly to supposedly be removed from mailing lists. Leigh B Terrell, t7789ter@gte.net http://home1.gte.net/t7789ter/index.htm , Do we have common ancestors or relations?...
I am looking for information on John William WEST. He was born in 1828, most likely in "downeast" Maine, and died in 1905. He was married to Prudence "Dency" Tenney, who was born in 1838, in Columbia Falls, Maine. thanks
Perhaps spam attack's can be returned to the sender, after all they seem to value that information the most. Hi: I received message from the list on ll-12. The other night, though I had some other rootsweb problems. rosie
Dear Myra, As always, a few spoil things for everyone else. Do what you need to do to keep this great list going. I enjoy all the posts and have found some wonderful contacts through this list. Thank you! Preventing non-members from posting to a mailing list is a good first step but it's not 100 percent secure from unwanted mail or malicious attacks. It's still possible for an individual to obtain a forwarding e-mail account to subscribe to a mail list. Once subscribed, the individual can set the forwarding e-mail account to point back to the mail list. As you can imagine every pice of mail, from that point on, sent out and received by the forwarding account will be forwarded back to the mail list. The mail list, in turn, sends the message(s) back out again and an infinite loop occurs. The more mail that is sent out, the more mail is forwarded back to the mail list, to the point where it brings the mail system to a crawl, if it doesn't crash it from overload. The internet is like living in the USA today, where people must decide which they want more, freedom or security. The more of one you have, the less of the other you will have. I'm sure better passive security means on the internet will develop as the internet matures but for right now, it's all wide open and anything goes. Sorry for the OT and I'm off my soapbox and back to the lurk mode. :-) Happy hunting! Jeff
Great idea. I subscribed just in time! I am on one closed list now, and another list is having problems. I am writing down all the email addresses on the spam. In one of my back computer magazines there are a couple of addresses to turn them in; when I get that looked up I am turning them all in! There are usually at least two spam messages a day. I am also contacting my ISP on what they have for a spam filter. Always something that spoils things for the rest of us, isn't there! Joan Alyea
I need help finding my WESTS: Henry West was mentioned as the father of John Joseph West (1844-1905) on John's marriage license! John lived in Nash and Edgecombe Counties in NC. John married Sallie Mason in Dec 1867 in Edge Co. Does anyone know anything about this line of Wests? Jeff West Richmond VA
Myra, I think it is a good idea to only post subscribers. In the Payne-l list the owner intercepts outsiders and if it is legit he posts it. Thanks, David S. Myra and WEST list subscribers: Subscribe. Not to subscribe. I think those words say it all. We either choose to belong to a group or we choose not to belong to a group. Translated: I believe all mailing lists should belong only to those who identify ourselves and go through the subscribing process. There are rights enjoyed by us who belong to the subscribers' group. Those who do not belong should not enjoy those rights. Prime of course is the right to benefit from each other's research. Enough said! Fran
