    2. Dear Dale, Here is a bibliography for my line of WESTs: _______, History of Franklin and Pickaway Counties, Ohio, with Illustrations and Biographical Sketches, (n.p. Williams Bros. Publishers, 1880), 325-326. (A copy is located in the Iowa Historical Library, Iowa City, IA.) "George West came from Virginia about 1804, and bought about nine hundred acres of the Butler survey, in the southeast part of the township and on the Scioto River. He had eleven children, of whom nine came to maturity. They were: Daniel [my line, pmf]; Peter; Frederick; John; George; Elizabeth; Mary; Sarah; Barbara; Margaret, and Catharine. George died young; Frederick went into the army and served in the War of 1812, came home broken down in health and died. On the death of Mr. West the property was divided between the children, each receiving one hundred acres. Seven made improvements, and two sold to the others. Daniel died in 1861, in Harrison township, and Margaret in Jackson. The rest, with the exception of Peter, went West, where they died. George West died in 1824." [Same reference and page} "Peter West came from Virginia in 1804, at the same time as his father's family. He remained on the east side of the river about five years, and in 1809 settled on one hundred acres belonging to his father, in Scioto township. He married Elizabeth Bartley, and had seven children, of whom five are now living. Mary married John Seaburn; Sarah married Mason Cleveland; John married Elizabeth Howe, and lives a widower, in Iowa; Elizabeth married Luke Wilkins, and lives in the township; Margaret married J.W. Stiverson, and lives on the Peter West homestead. Mr. West died April 6, 1840, aged fifty-eight. His wife, Elizabeth, died June 1, 1850, aged seventy- two." [Same reference, 326] "Mrs. Stiverson was the sixth and youngest child of Peter West and Elizabeth Bartly [sic]. Her father was a native of Virginia, and was born February 8, 1782. Her mother was a native of Pennsylvania, and was born September 12, 1778. Her parents came to Ohio in 1804, and settled on the Scioto River, where the Stiverson family now resides. Her father [Peter West, pmf] built and operated a large ferry boat, for several years, and Miss Margaret West--now Mrs. Stiverson--was his only helper much of the time, and she soon understood the management of the awkward craft as well as her father... She is a member of the Christian church." William West, a son of the above Daniel West, moved his family from Pickaway Co., Ohio, to Decatur Co., Iowa, ca. 1852. The following is a sketch about him: _______, Biographical and Historical Record of Ringgold and Decatur Counties, Iowa, (Chicago: Lewis Publishing Co., 1887), 699. (Also located in the Iowa Historical Library, Iowa City, Iowa.) "William West, deceased, was born in Ohio in 1817, a son of Daniel and Mary West, natives of Virginia. He was reared on a farm, and in 1843 was married, near Columbus, Ohio, to Elizabeth Robinson, a native of Ohio, born in 1822, a daughter of Isaac and Ann (Humes) Robinson, natives of Pennsylvania. Their living children are--Charles of Decatur County; Hamilton of Nebraska; Mrs. Ann M. Pierce [sic, should be Fierce, my maternal gr grandmother], of Iowa; Allen and John of Nebraska; Elmina, wife of Albert Hubbard of Nebraska; Jefferson N. and Isaac. The deceased children are--Daniel; Mary; Martin L. and Lincoln. Mr. and Mrs. West came to Decatur County, Iowa, in 1854. They commenced life poor, but were industrious and economical, and at his death Mr. West left an estate of 900 acres. Mrs. West owns 230 acres of this land, eighty acres of which are under cultivation. She is an estimable woman, a good manager, and has charge of her farm, the work being done by hired help. In politics, Mr. West was a Republican. He held the office of assessor, and also several school offices. He was a member of the Grange Order, an organization in which he was much interested. Mrs. West's postoffice address is DeKalb." [DeKalb is not longer in existence in Decatur Co., IA, pmf] Thanks so much for posting the above on your web site. I appreciate it. Patt Fulton 1307 Kinney Ave., #150 Austin, TX. 78704-2287 e-mail: PattFulton@aol.com Dale: I'm adding the following, because I've noticed on the WEST message list, a line of WESTS went to Van Buren Co., IA. While in Pickaway Co., Ohio, my Wests had as their minister, the Reverend Joseph A. Roof. "Church Records of Reverend Joseph A. Roof, 1800-1890, Pickaway Co., Ohio, (Transcribed) Microfilm No. 0223893, Family History Library, Salt Lake. "Rev. Roof assumed the ministry of the Lutheran (Reformed) Church, Pickaway Co. 1834, remained until 1855. During this time he removed to Van Buren Co., Iowa, also preached at Lee Co., Iowa. He returned to Ohio from Iowa on 13 August 1860, after spending five years, four months in Iowa.... He was in Circleville, Pickaway Co., Ohio from 1835-1855..." [Comment: Perhaps some of the Wests followed Rev. Roof to Iowa and remained there, pmf]

    1. [WEST-L] John WEST from NY
    2. I am looking for more information on John WEST who was born in 1760 in Huntington, LI, NY. During the Revolutionary War John was enlisted in NY and then moved to Vermont and also enlisted in Vermont. He was listed on 1790 census in Sandgate, Bennington, Vt. Then about 1804 he moved to Cayuga Co., NY and moved again to Marcellus, Ononodaga Co., NY where he lived for 23 years. I assumed he was the father of Amerillus and Benjamin. Amerillus married Stephen SHERWOOD and had several children. Harlow S. Sherwood was born in 1822 in Marcellus, NY (my direct ancestor). I have been trying to find out where John was living in 1800. Thank you for your time if you have information on John West and his family. DEE

    1. [WEST-L] My Wests
    2. Janet Munro
    3. Here are my Wests again: Thomas West, possibly born in Ohio (so my great-grandmother thought). Died in Wisconsin (no place or date given). Married to _______ Davis, also possibly born in Ohio (my g-grandmother also wrote that she was "1st cousin to Jeff Davis" - however, in looking at his family tree, I don't see how this is possible). Also died in Wisconsin (no place or date). Their children: George ? West Benjamin West Fanny West Eliza Sophia West - my ggg-grandmother. Married to William Phillips, a physician and farmer in Bond Head, Simcoe Co., Ontario, CAN The Phillips were Quakers and I assume that the Wests may also have been. William Phillips and Eliza Sophia West's children were: Thomas, Owen, Benjamin, William, Elizabeth (married a Watson), Rebecca (married a Proctor), Hannah and Mary. These last two sisters married two brothers, Thomas West Roberts and Andrew Roberts. The Roberts were also Quakers. Andrew Roberts and Mary Phillips are my gg-grandparents. Mary Phillips was born Aug 27 1838 in Bond Head. I have estimated that her mother, Eliza Sophia would have been born about 1818 and that her father, Thomas West would have been born around 1798 or so. I have no idea about Thomas's parents or siblings. Janet Munro, Sonoma, CA

    1. [WEST-L] Late Roll Call: Amos West Family
    2. Ben West
    3. Dear Researchers, I am descended from Amos West (1766-1819), who was born in Green Springs, Louisa County, Virginia. Amos, as some of you are already aware, was the brother of William (1752-1842) and Leonard West (1760-1842), the ancestors of three other West-L subscribers. Following the unexpected deaths of his parents, Amos was reared in Orange County, North Carolina, by his maiden aunt, Miss Lucy Fike. As family tradition documents, Amos was a Revolutionary War soldier during the war's latter years. No proof of this service has been located, for he passed away prior to receiving the opportunity to apply for a pension. He married Frances Herndon, eldest daughter of James Herndon and Isabella Thompson, enroute to Logan County, Kentucky, on April 2, 1791. (The exact marriage location was Sumner County, Tennessee.) They became the parents of the following children: i. MARY "POLLY" WEST, b. December 28, 1791, Gallatin, Sumner County, Tennessee; d. March 06, 1851, Sulphur Spring, Simpson County, Kentucky; m. WILLIAM MILLIKEN, son of GEORGE MILLIKEN and AGNESS WEST, August 09, 1808, Logan County, Kentucky. ii. LEONARD E. WEST, b. 1796, Logan County, Kentucky; d. Bef. 1870, Graves County, Kentucky; m. MARGARET DOSS, Abt. 1822, Illinois. iii. ISABELLA WEST, b. May 25, 1798, Logan County, Kentucky; d. October 16, 1843, Logan County, Kentucky; m. HIRAM H. HALCOMB, son of GEORGE HALCOMB and SARAH HENDERSON, January 18, 1813, Logan County, Kentucky. iv. AGNESS WEST, b. January 10, 1800, Logan County, Kentucky; d. June 06, 1871, Clear Springs, Graves County, Kentucky; m. JOHN P. BUSH, son of WILLIAM BUSH AND NANCY ??? March 21, 1822, Logan County, Kentucky. v. JAMES HERNDON WEST, b. 1803, Logan County, Kentucky; d. January 14, 1858, Simpson County, Kentucky; m. JANE BABB, daughter of ALSTON BABB AND JANE HAMILTON, March 18, 1834, Robertson County, Tennessee. vi. RICHARD WEST*, b. January 06, 1806, Logan County, Kentucky; d. March 04, 1841, Logan County, Kentucky; m. AMY WILLIAMSON, daughter of CHRISTOPHER WILLIAMSON, Abt. 1826, Bruton Parish Church, Williamsburg, Virginia. * I am descended from Richard. Does anyone have any further information on Amos's ancestry? I have have inquired of this to all subscribers several times before, yet am reposting this in light of the recent roll call. I have discovered evidence that a Joseph Matthew West is somehow related to my Richard West family. Many of my correspondents in the past proposed theories that several Matthew Wests of Logan and Simpson Counties, Kentucky, were related to Amos, Leonard, and William West. While I am far from locating proof, I have amassed a significant addition to our theories. This Joseph Matthew West (1777-1859) was the son of Joseph Milton West and Sarah Eliza Bush. (I might mention that Milton was a popular middle name among William West's descendants.) This Joseph Milton was born before or around 1757, making him a wonderful candidate to be a distant cousin, an uncle, or in more unusual cases a brother to Amos West. This is merely hypothesizing, though. I will be making attempts to verify the claims of a relationship between this family and mine. Might anyone happen to have information on Joseph Milton's family? For those interested, I will be more than willing to expound upon what is written here. Ben West bmwest@usit.net P. S. It is believed that Joseph Milton migrated from North Carolina, probably near Granville County, to the Alabama Territory prior to 1777. A recent source I located claims that Margaret Murrah West, Joseph Matthew West's wife, had a sister-in-law named Amy Williamson West. Whether this relationship is on the Murrah side or the West side, I am uncertain. If this statement was made in regards to the West family, then there would be certain flaws in this proposed relationship. Perhaps the exact kinship was misunderstood.

    1. [WEST-L] Durant L. West, NC, GA, AR
    2. Hi, any help that anyone could give would be very much appreciated. I am looking for information on: Durant L. (D. L.) West b. 1812, NC m. abt. 1838 probably Ga. to Narcissa Hurst b. 1824, GA, possibly Macon County, died 1878, Sebastion County, Lavaca, Ark. Children: James J. b. 1839, Ga., died Dale County, Ala. from illness during Civil War. Mary b. 1841, Ala. Martha Elizabeth b. 1843, Ala., m. Dr. G. N. Croom, died 1937, Ft. Smith Ark. Giorgian b. 1845, Ala. Munroe Clayton b. 1847, Ala. died Tunica County, Miss. (Archileris C.) b. 1849, Ala. John B. b. 1851, Ala. Walter Durant b. 1855, Ala., died 1946, Sebastion County, Lavaca, Ark. Emma D. b. 1860, Ala. died 1936, Sebastion County, Lavaca, Ark. Beauregard L. b. 1864, Ala. R. E. b. 1865, Ala. Laura J. b. 1869, Ala. I think D. L. West may have moved from N.C. to Ga. with his family during childhood or young adulthood. After he married Narcissa Hurst, they lived in Ga. a short while then moved to Dale County, Ala. about 1840. They lived on the county line of Coffee and Dale County, so they were counted in the census of Coffee Co. one year and another year they were counted in Dale Co. They were living in what was at one time called Haw Ridge, Ala. The government was trying to settle western Arkansas and there was land to be had there, so, sometime around 1875, they moved to Lavaca, Sebastion County, Ark. 1. I am trying to find the parents to D. L. West and the parents of his wife, Narcissa Hurst. 2. Locate where each were born. 3. Of the children, I only know the history of Walter Durant West, Emma D. West, Martha Elizabeth West and a little about James J. West and Monroe Clayton West. I can find nothing on the other children. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might have information on this West family. Becky Davenport becky1021@aol.com
