I found Penny's John WEST from Ireland posted Jan. 20th very interesting. My John WEST was said to have be born on a ship coming over from Ireland. This would have been about 1812. I have not been able so far to find a ship that lists WESTS with an infant. I can't find where John came from if this story is not true. I believe they were in Hawkins County TN by 1836 when James, my great grandfather was born. Any suggestions?? Thanks for any help you can give me. Was hoping Penny's note was a key but doesn't seem to be. Phyllis at pjwp@juno.com
My gr-gr grandfather was John WEST. He married Lavina (Vina) MYERS. Their children were born in Hawkins CO, TN. There is a John WEST Sr. mentioned in the Civil District 14 Taxpayers list of 1836 and also a John WEST in District 15, 1836. Also mentioned in Dist. 15 are the EVERHEARTS (EVERHARTS) and that is the family my grandfather George Washington WEST married into in 1894. John and Vina had James born Sept. 1836 and he had George. They had several other children too. Any way of proving which is my John or if either one is? I can't find where John came from and no marriage license was found in TN for him and Vina. Thanks for any help you can give me. Phyllis at pjwp@juno.com
I'd like to locate descendents or other relatives of my great-great-uncle Willaba (Will) West. Will was born in 1861, either in Laurens County SC or in Monroe County MS. His parents were Zachariah Simpson (Z.S. or Simp) West, 1820-1871, and Martha Whitfield, 1833-1912. Z.S. died in Mississippi, and Martha and the children (Will, Mary Kathirine "Kate", Clentonia, and Zack Eri Ellurian "Z.E.") moved on to Texas some years later. Will married Lona Simmons and had twelve children, including twins Lydia and Lillie. I have photos of Martha Whitfield, Kate, Z.E., Lydia, Lillie, and Aunt Lona on my West web page: http://www.theshop.net/missbev/family/Wests2.html With twelve children, surely some of them are researching the family tree! Beverly missbev@theshop.net
If at first you don't succeed, etc., etc., I am going to try this once again. I am seeking the origins of Christopher Columbus "Lum" West, b. ca 1831, Alabama; who was in Jackson County right after the War Between the States. He has wife Elizabeth, (b. 1833, AL/d. 1898, Jackson Co.) and children: Carrie, Sarah, Mary Elizabeth, James, John, Frances A., Charles C. and Lurlina. There were other WEST families in the area but I have found nothing to tie him to any of them. I would appreciate even "educated guesses". Thought I would try posting one more time before giving up. John WEST came from Ireland by ship w/his first wife, their 4 children (Vinson, Charles, Peggy, and Mary L) and 1 infant. His wife and the infant died on the journey. John met and married Martha Patsy OVERSTREET in Montgomery Co. (?), GA. John was a Doctor. John and Martha WEST had children; Robinson, Stephen, and Catherine. There may be more children that have not been identified. I would like to obtain knowledge of John's parents in Ireland, possibly info about his siblings, and what happened to his children. Thought some of you might like to know that court house in Oakville is still standing. My husband and I drove by it last week and were talking about it. Found the following - Richard WEST, GEORGE WASHINGTON (1851-1926). George West, cattleman and trail driver, eldest of three sons of Washington and Mary B. (Willauer) West, was born at Shannonville, Tennessee, on March 10, 1851. In 1854 Washington West moved his family to Lavaca County, Texas, and their home became an important stagecoach stop, which developed into the community of Sweet Home. George was one of the first to drive longhorn cattle to the Kansas railheads in 1867-68, and he continued driving until the trails closed. In 1870 he contracted with the government to deliver 14,000 longhorns to the Rosebud Indian Reservation in Montana. Although he was the youngest man with the herd, he was the trail boss, and this drive, from Lavaca County, Texas, to the destination, just 100 miles south of the Canadian border, probably qualifies as the longest trail drive on record. George had two brothers, Ike and Sol, who were also trail drivers in the period 1870-90. George West married Katherine "Kittie" Elizabeth Searcy, a descendant of the early American colonist John Searcy on June 18, 1874. They had no children. During the 1870s West made many drives to Kansas, Nebraska, Montana, Wyoming, and the Dakotas. In 1880 he and his wife moved to Live Oak County and purchased a 140,000-acre ranch and 26,000 cattle. This ranch included the site of the present town of George West, which he founded in 1913, and extended from the Nueces River on the north and east to McMullen County on the west. He had 80,000 cattle in 1882, when he lost so many in the drought that he had to sell off half of his ranch. J. Frank Dobie, another Live Oak County son, records that cowboys employed by West were instructed to chop off the left horn of every dead steer and bring it to a pile at the ranch headquarters. After the height of the pile exceeded that of the gatepost and was estimated at between 3,000 and 20,000 dead animals, they quit. About the turn of the century West sold 60,000 acres to Charles Simmons, of St. Louis, Missouri, who subdivided it, held a lottery for lots, and established the town of Simmons, Texas, in 1907. About 1910 West also turned his efforts toward colonization and town development by donating $100,000 and a free right-of-way through his ranch to the San Antonio, Uvalde and Gulf Railroad (called the "Sausage Line"), and the railroad became a reality in 1912. He also established the town named in his honor in the succeeding years and built a $75,000 courthouse in order to remove the county seat from Oakville, a $50,000 school, highways, bridges, public utilities, and a hotel across from the railroad depot. He moved to a permanent residence in San Antonio in 1904 and attended the Baptist Church there. He died in San Antonio on February 16, 1926. Evidently West had married a second time. His widow was listed as Mrs. Robbie Bedell West, and they had two daughters. BIBLIOGRAPHY: J. Gary, due to your having published the below message on WEST-L, I was able to locate a town in TX, Bronte, that is no longer in existence. In 1997 I was in Dallas at the renowned Dallas Library. The staff there could find no reference to Bronte, Bront, Brunt, etc. Just now I typed in the spelling handed down from an Uncle, Bronte, and guess what? I downloaded significant information on Bronte, TX! Two of our WEST line, so the story goes, went to Bronte, TX in the late 1800's never to be heard of again by the GA WEST line. Thanks to your help, I will be able to attempt tracking them through Coke Co., TX. Thank you for taking the time to send the TX Hand Book On-line URL. The town of George West, Texas is named after George West. What is his West ancestry? The town of George West is about 3O miles west of Beeville and is north of Corpus Christi.
My grandfather, Elijah Samuel West, was born February 16, 1870, in Ohio or West Virginia, I think. He married Jessie Buchanan in Pleasants County, WV, on August 22, 1894. Elijah and his brothers James and Albert came to South Dakota in the early years of this century and all died here, Elijah on December 23, 1948. I think Elijah's father was Sylvester, probably from Ohio, but I don't have any concrete information. Does anyone on this list know anything about this family? Thank you for any help you can give me. George West
