A nice note about the microfilmed copy of the West Register, available for order at LDS. LDS also has on microfilm all of Mrs. Brock's group sheets, correspondence, research by location (i.e. Indiana West), etc. There is quite a good deal of information that she did not get published with the book. Happy hunting. K. Haefner Missouri
Perhaps instead of using OCR, or transcribing the entire book (a big job!), you might consider posting photocopies of the pages on your web pages instead - similar to transcripts of parts of the William and Mary's Quarterly that were recently posted on the Web. I don't know how much memory that would consume, or what's involved, but it's a thought. Paul Dale West wrote: > Because of the age the book can be legally reproduced. FYI: The West Family Register has also been microfilmed. You can find it for free in many of the family history libraries throughout the country. I also found a hardbound copy (original) in the family history library on the Brigham Young University campus in Provo, Utah. Now don't everyone rush to ask me to look stuff up for you. I don't live in Provo, Utah, and I have a hard time getting to the nearby family history library. Sorry. But, I wonder if there would be any copyright violations if someone decided to reprint the book on the WEB? Anyone want to tackle that issue? Because of the age the book can be legally reproduced. I would be happy to post it on my site if I get some volunteers to help transcribe it. I will attempt a few pages in OCR and see what kind of nightmare it might be. Sometimes it is easier to transcribe than fix all the OCR errors. Dale West "Paul W. I have been looking for a book, "The West Family Register", by Letta B. Stone. I understand if you own just one book on West genealogy, this is the one. I just received several DAR applications on my West line and this book was referenced several times in each application. The book traces West lines from 1326 to 1928 and is 493 pages. The book is out of print and I would imagine some of you already have it but for the newer list subscribers, today I found a company in Salem, Massachusetts that reproduces the book in paper back or hard bound. The paperback edition is $77 and for $10 more dollars you can get the hard bound edition. They have lots of other surname genealogy books as well as a few other West family books. You can go to their web page for telephone, fax, address and ordering information as well as a database of all the genealogy books they sell. http://www.higginsonbooks.com/ I don't want this to sound like an endorsement or advertisement, it is not. There are probably a number of places to order this book, I just happened to find them after searching for a few days for the book. I have no affiliation with the Higginson Book Co., just a happy genealogist to have the book I have been looking for. -- Dale West e-mail: dwest@banet.net Visit the WestFamily Genealogy web site - http://westfamily.genealogy.org
I think it would be wonderful if they could just put the index (if it has an index) on the internet. Then everyone could find what person and what page and just email the submitter for information on that specific person. Hi, I'm new to this mail and I hope I have enough information. I need to find out about some WESTs in AR> The first known for us is a NOWIE WEST (not sure about the spelling of his first name) who married a BETTY HANLEY. We do that he was a farmer in the England, AR area and work at a tie mill in McRae. He died in 1947 at 4-Mile Corner, near Des Arc, AR. We do not know anything else about them. If you have any information please let us know. Thanks, Amy West, Vilonia, AR

i was just wondering if it would be possible for us all to be slightly more descriptive in our subject lines. I am subscribed to about 10 lists, as are many others, and, sometimes many of us send the same messages to many lists, or different messages under the same subject. if you see 5 messages with the same nondescript subject (ie. Most wanted (surname) or my brick wall, or my elusive (surname) etc.) not only is it tough to figure out which ones you may have already read, you also need to go through every piece of email (I myself receive approx. 60-80 emails a day) to figure out if you can help or if it has value for you, whereas if the name or precise info is included directly in the subject line, you can tell immediately if you recognize the name, and decide if it seems useful enough to bother opening. ( I know we would like everyone to read our queries regardless of the subject, but i know that the world doesnt work that way - i'm sure many of my queries have been deleted without a second thought - it comes with the territory.) I'm not trying to offend anyone, (although i dont think there is anything here to get offended by - but you never know...) i just thought i'd put this in writing, and see what happens. thanks, christopher west kitsuno@aol.com

Greetings, I have a copy of a will for Joseph WEST, Londongrove, Chester Co. PA, written 8/18/1816, probated Nov 11, 1817. Joseph West is son of Thomas West(b. abt. 1714/1715) and Susanna Powell. The 1714 Thomas West is the son of Thomas West (b. abt 1670) who married Mary Dean. That Thomas was the son of Thomas West (b. abt 1642) and Rachel Ann Gilpin. Wife of Joseph West was Susanna Wiley, married Joseph 4/26/1869, 8 children, Jesse, Rachel, Mary, Hannah, Joseph, William, Susanna, and Thomas, (youngest to oldest) Of particular interest, $80 to the 5 children of son William, Deceased. $20 to the 3 children of daughter Susanna, Deceased, who was married with George Wray. Jesse not mentioned or provided for. Will provides for wife Susanna with profits from plantation during widowhood, with specific bequests for Rachael, Joseph, Thomas, Mary, and dau Hannah Price. Joseph and Susanna and children went back and forth between Centre, Kennett, Concord, Chester, and London Grove Quaker Monthly Meetings. This line is a parallel line to that of John West and Sarah Pearson, which includes the painter Benjamin West, which line seems pretty well documented and researched. Not much on the line of Joseph West, though. Anyone looking into it? (Joseph also had a brother Thomas West, born abt 1738, died 1779, intestate, married Esther Newlin 1759, no children apparently, second marriage to Sarah Yarnell of Ridley, 1769, 4 children, Esther, Thomas, Joel and Rebecca) Curt Ritter At Home Arlington, VA
Debby K. and others I have been reading in the Strickland Books, reply about Patsy Overstreet & John West this is some of what I have found, don't know if it is a help or makes for more confusion. >From the book, Misc..Court records Wayne Co.MS. W.R.Cooley ,vs..Mrs. Levinia Douglas,Sept.Term Court 1912. Action to quiet title to land in NE 1/4 of Section 11,Township 8 North,Range 8 west-160 acres. W.R.Cooley states that he has occupied this land for 15 years and that he bought it from JOHN WEST who is a bro..of Mrs..Lavenia Douglas. The land originally belong to JOHN WEST,the father of JOHN A.WEST.John West received land by patent from U.S. J.M.Stewart,Chancellor. I looked up land records of the above description and it is, Document Nr. 3431 misc..Document Nr.:14443 Homestead,Signature date 8/19/1891.John West. Cooley said he has occupied land for 15 years so he probley bought it in 1897 not sure if John died or not,but since Cooley is dealing with John's sister, any suggestions any one? In the book who lived where Wayne CO.MS. states that Samuel Lee b.1775 son of Zachariah & Lucy (Farmer) LEE of Robeson CO.N.C. Samuel 1st.m Sarah Slay and 2nd m.Patsy Overstreet, daughter of John & Catherine Overstreet,Patsy was widow of JOHN WEST. Since PATSY O.was married to this JOHN WEST and he died, that would make JOHN A.West her son or step-son any suggestions? I would appreciate it very much if the person who sent it would get in touch with me with this information. Thanks. Barbara Allen w/o Joseph West Allen Jr. BAllen9614@aol.com
