Myra and list, To all AOL members who want to know how to add hyperlinks. Just go to compose mail, then the site you want to add as a hyperlink. Click on the "heart" and a pop up window will appear, asking you where to put the favorite place. Click on the "insert in mail" and it will appear in your mail. Other servers may be a little different, but should allow this option. Incidently, often when I see a promising URL on the list, I simply highlight the URL address, copy and paste it into the web address line and presto, it takes me where I want to go. Ida West Ramsey
Phyllis, Where in TN do your WEST'S originate? Mine are supposed to have been born in TN and lived in MS. My gr-grandfather, James WEST was born abt. 1820 either in TN or KY depending on which census you read. The 1880 US census of Marshall Co., MS says he and his parents were born in TN then the 1920 US census of Yakima Co., WA says he was born in KY. Which do you believe. I have a cousin in Germany that says that his gr-grandfather was born in the Carolinas, and he could be a brother to my James WEST. The WEST families are so hard to trace. Every time I go to your web pages I get the feeling that there is so much similarity in how much your WEST's look like my WEST's. You know they say pictures say a lot and that means even looking like other members of lost families. My gr-grandfather, James WEST was born abt 1820 either in KY or TN. According the the 1880 US census of Marshall Co., MS it says he was 60 and that he and his parents were born in TN. His wife, Amanda Jane was, I believe, 30 born in AL. When my mother was born in WA in 1917 I checked the 1920 census for Yakima Co., WA and it said her grandfather, James WEST was born in KY. My grandmother, Pirley Andrew WEST was born in Water Valley, Yalobusha Co., MS 22 Sep 1875 but lived in Byhalia, Marshall Co., MS. Other names married into this family that I know of are Amanda Jane RAGSDALE, Adam PREHER, Lou BOWEN, Samuel ELLIS, etc. What information do you have on other WEST's living in MS in the 1800's? After I get moved to KY I plan on going back to MS and doing some more checking as well as in TN and KY. Hi Gary, Leta Brock Stone's book, The West Family Register has this to say about the Wests in Monmouth Co., NJ: A drift of migration from Rhode Island to long Island, and thence to Monmouth County, New Jersey, carried in its wake Bartholomew and Robert West, Sr., in 1670. In 1681, William, Stephen, and Robert West received land in Monmouth County, and according to the History of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, Audrey West, the wife of on Stephen, received land about 1675. The early ancestors of this line was Mathew West, of Rhode Island, who had the following sons: 1. Nathaniel West 2. John West 3. Robert West, Sr. 4. Bartholomew West 5. Francis West 1. Nathaniel West died about 1659, leaving a son, Nathaniel West 3. Robert West, Sr., born in Rhode Island, later lived in Shrewsbury, New Jersey. He married 1st, Elizabeth, who died before 1697, and 2nd, Frances Stout, a widow, by whom he had one son, only. He had the following children: 6. Elizabeth West 7. Mary West m. Cammack 8. Joseph West 9. Robert West, Jr. 10. Anne west m. Henry Chamberlain 11. John West 4. Bartholomew West married Catherine Almy, who died in 1703. He died about 1675, leaving: 12. Bartholomew West 13. William West 14. John west 15. Stephen West 16. Audrey West m. Webley 17. anne West m. Wooley 5. Francis West, born in Rhode Island, moved to New Jersey, where he died, leaving two sons, Francis and Richard West. 8. Joseph West, son of Robert West and Elizabeth, married Deborah Slocum, and they had a daughter, Margaret West, who died in 1869. She married, in 1799, Brittain Edwards, who was born in 1772, and died in 1851. 12. Bartholomew West, son of Bartholomew West and Catherine Almy, died in 1766. He had a daughter, Margaret West, who married Philip Edwards. They had a son, Stephen, who married Deborah West, daughter of John and Lydia (Worthley) West. Hope this will help you. Eileen
Does anyone know the ancestry of this Peter West? Speculation is that he is descended from Henry West who was cast out of Virginia after Bacon's Rebellion. His daughter married a Cotton whose grandmother wrote an account of Bacon's Rebellion that is published in the Colonial Genealogist. Many of those who participated in that Rebellion were killed. Some think the fact that these people were merely banished was because of high connections in England Could these Wests have been connected to the Wests who governed early Virginia? Hi again, Well, I am one step closer to finding these elusive West's. We now know that they came from MO before they came to AR. If you have MO. West's would you please look for me and see if you have a NOAH or NOWIE WEST. He moved from northern MO to AR in the early 1900's. He married a BETTY HANLEY. I'm sorry this is rather little to go on but we have so little about him. Thank you, Amy West

We will look at posts regarding the Reply To option today. Then it's back to genealogy. The majority seem to like option of having all replies go to thel list. Myra, hi! Thanks for the reply. While your instructions regarding sending of private messages are clear, to me they, and the necessity for them, seem exceedingly complex. (Recall my level of computer experience?) I know I am overwhelmingly outnumbered and the decision has been made, but I do not like this new system. I would happily click on "send to all" to avoid the complications of the new setup. There exists for me another dilemma created by the new and apparently highly desirable method of participating in the WEST-L: Three researchers wish to have snailmail names and addresses of persons I know to be researching a Benjamin WEST. There is no way I will put those names and addresses on a public forum where the writer's identity can not be ascertained prior to sending. (My son is a computer whiz and helps when I need it.) So while others greatly favor the new method, and we live in a democracy, the "preferred" way is an unpleasant chore to me. Thank you for your time and for the explanation. Beverly, thanks for the information. My uncle, Walter Earl Pittman, who researched our Pittman and related lines between the 1950's and 1970's was unable to find this out. Let me digest the information and I will get back to you with more questions. Thanks again. Did you know that William Randolph West was a physician in the Confederate army- under General Forrest- He and Millennium both died of typhoid fever during an epidemic a few months apart. Dear cuzins, I'm posting this info as no one has been able to claim a link. Hopefully, someone will be able to make a connection. Myra, I think getting the answers to all the posts is a great idea. I love to read about all these WESTS even though I know the chance of them being related to me is remote. Flossy, I have a William West in my database b 16 August 1810, died after 1870 (per Dannie C. West <dannywest@worldnet.att.net>) It is unknown where he died, or where he is buried. He is the son of Simon West b 1 Nov 1784, d 24 Mar 1857 and Kizzah Boiter, b 6 Jan 1788 d 1 May 1865. They are buried in Bethlehem Cemetery, Roebuck, SC. Cemetery records for Bethlehem Cemetery at Roebuck, SC shows a W. T. west b 30 Mar 1846, d 4 Nov 1929, Husband of Sue J. Lanford, b 10 Jul 1857, d 20 Mar 1937. There is also a Willis P. West, b 26 Feb 1842, and died 15 Apr 1842. I didn't find any of the other names you mentioned in those records. The records I have are of the Wests buried in cemeteries aroung Spartenburg. There is a book of all the cemeteries compiled by Horace E. Gilbert, and Rodney Dusterhoft. Hope this helps, Bill
