Some of you might find this silly, but some of my relatives did not. We were researching my father's line in SC. Always believed they came from Wales to SC. I found out that our GGG Grandfather was a Yankee who was given land in SC after the Rev War. You would have thought that that was far enough back to rub off the stink, but they did not think so. Some of them still won't accept it...think my research is wrong. After all, how could a good Southern family have a Yankee progenitor? LOL!!
Dear Members of the list: What I am say is a fact in all of past. I don't want to offend anyone. and I don't want to start a flaming war on this list: so what I am about to say please do not get upset about. My father always told me that grandfather was once the leader of the KKK. Now where will that little bit of info lead me? I hope I have not made anybody mad. If I did I am so sorry.
Digging into your past can be an intriguing and tricky thing. As they say, careful what you look for, you might find it. My wife is Irish (as in born there, raised there, and lived there until we married two years ago). I've developed a strong affinity toward Ireland and particularly the strong, partisan views of my wife and her family. It was somewhat awkward, a few months ago, when I finally found my long sought-after Irish ancestors, only to uncover detailed explanations of my own family's involvement in the Irish conflict from the "other" side of things. Reading to my wife the story of my uncle shooting and crippling a schoolgirl was not exactly what I imagined when I first opened the chronicles of my family's life in Ireland. Never-the-less, that's the truth of things. We open up a gigantic vault when we delve into our roots. What we dig up may not always be pretty, but hopefully, we can manage to gain something from it regardless. -----Original Message----- From: Linda DuPuy <dupuy@alltel.net> To: WEST-L@rootsweb.com <WEST-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Monday, February 08, 1999 8:07 PM Subject: Re: [WEST-L] HINT ABOUT MY BEN WEST >Personal opinion only...we didn't get to pick our ancestors...they are >who they are...I have family legend that my Wests out of Missouri were >KKK members at one time and also rode with Quantrill's Raiders, >neither of which would make me proud...but then again I remember >Grandpa (Orville Marion West, b 1900) telling me how great Bonnie and >Clyde were too! Hi Cousin Edith, Most of my family were born in Hawkins County, Tennessee. My line is John WEST b. abt. 1812, don't know where, married Lavina (Vina) MYERS b. abt. 1817 in TN, (TN archives could find no record of their marriage). Their children were: James born Sept. 16, 1836, d. August 19, 1923 in Morristown, TN. James was my great grandfather. The other children were: Amos b. 1837; Lydia b. 1839; John b. 1841; Elizabeth b. 1843; William b. 1846; and George b. 1848. Not sure how accurate these dates are. Still doing a lot of research. James married Sarah (Sallie) SCARBROUGH (SCARBER) b. abt. 1830 in NC and d. in TN. Also sent for their marriage record in TN and none could be found. Her Mother was Winney SCARBROUGH. Their children were: Florence, not sure where we got her because I can't find her in any census I have, John Andrew b. 1856 d. in Dayton, Ohio; William b. 1858; James Hezekiah b. 1860; Sarah b. 1863; Vina b. 1868; Lydia b. May 1870 and my Grandpa George Washington WEST born June 14, 1871 I think, in Bulls Gap, TN, Hawkins county, d. December 1, 1943 in Wheeling, Indiana, Carroll county. James served in the First TN CAV. for the Union Army. He is buried in Providence Cemetery beside his brother William who fought for the Confederates. He left his family because as he says in his pension papers, "I was accused of some trouble", and he assumed the name of James Richards and lived in Allen County KY with a new wife, Susan GADDIS, b. May 1851 in TN. They had 2 children, Sallie RICHARDS b. Feb. 1880 in KY who married Joseph HYDE b. Aug. 1870 in KY and Cleveland b. Sept. 1884 in KY. At least they are listed as their children in the census. James is listed as a widower in 1923 when he dies after being hit by a train. James lived off and on at the Soldiers Home in Johnson City, TN. George married (Catherine) Elizabeth EVERHART, Feb. 19, 1894, in Hawkins CO, TN and their first 7 children were born in Hawkins county TN up until my Dad, (Otis) Lawrence, and then last 4 were born in NC where they moved in about 1914. They moved to IN in 1929. One married daughter remained in NC. Does this match with anybody? Phyllis WEST Parsons in Indiana
Personal opinion only...we didn't get to pick our ancestors...they are who they are...I have family legend that my Wests out of Missouri were KKK members at one time and also rode with Quantrill's Raiders, neither of which would make me proud...but then again I remember Grandpa (Orville Marion West, b 1900) telling me how great Bonnie and Clyde were too! It was a different time...a different place...I think all the clues help us find them and help us know from whence we came. Good luck on your search! Maybe we are connected...lol. By the way, I have a beautiful 3-month old bi-racial grandson...and he is as easy to love as were the first 3 grandsons. There is a new webring on line, the West Family WebRing. I invite any and all owners of genealogy web sites that contain a reasonable amount of WEST surname data to consider joining. You may ask yourself, "there are a thousand web rings on the internet, why join this one?" The "West Family WebRing" was initiated to support only genealogy sites that have a strong emphasis on the WEST surname. The webring will provide an easy approach for WEST researchers to find sites that may contain data that is pertinent to them. It should also increase the amount of shared WEST information for everyone. If you own a web site like I have described, please consider joining the "West Family WebRing." If you have any questions you may e-mail or go straight to the webring site: http://www.geocities.com/~gtkiwanis/webring/westring.htm If you want to e-mail me, please send new e-mails and and DON'T REPLY to this email. I don't want to clutter up the WEST-LIST with an off topic subject. -- Dale West e-mail: dwest@banet.net Visit the West Family Genealogy web site - http://westfamily.genealogy.org Surnames: WEST, OSBORN, RAYMOND, RIPPY, ROSS and more.
I am at the usual "brick wall" in locating info on my West ancestors. Here is a little of my West genealogy. Mother Jessie Leota West b: 1907 Murphysboro, Jackson, IL d: 1959 " Her Father Kenneth Howard West b: 1884 Murphysboro, Jackson, IL d: 1908 " His Father William Howard West b: Mar 18, 1859 Marion, Williamson, IL d: Dec 27, 1926 Carbondale, Jackson, IL His Father Nicodemus West b: 1824 in TN d: 1874 Marion, Williamson, IL I have two references for Nicodemus' birthplace: 1. Tumulty, Clinton, TN --- I have learned that there never was a town named Tumulty in Tennessee nor was there ever a county named Clinton. 2. Clinton, Anderson, TN ??? In the census documents I have read, Nicodemus says he was born in TN. Since he was born in 1824, there is no record of his birth in County records. I know Nicodemus was in Marion, IL in 1846. He joined the Illinois Infantry then and was in the Mexican War. He married Martha Malinda Mulkey in 1850. I have a copy of a page of the Marion Monitor wherein it reports Nicodemus' accidental death. Obediah West was born in VA in 1793 and ended up in Franklin and Williamson Counties, IL at least from 1827 til his death. I have a listing for the Primitive Baptist Church which lists him as a "messenger" in 1827 at a church in Marion, IL. Obediah was in the War of 1812 while living in VA and the Blackhawk War while living in IL. I have copies of his discharge papers from both of these military duties. I have a reference to the marriage of an Obediah H. West and Senath Smith in Chesterfield County, VA on 13 May 1815. Don't know if it is the same Obediah or not. In 1830, Obediah is listed in the 1830 Federal Census for Franklin County, IL as having 3 young sons and no spouse. I have searched Cem Inscps for Senath, but no luck. After the 1830 census was taken, he married Leah Teague and they had several offspring. He and Leah are listed in the censuses for 1840, 50, 60, 70, and 80. They died a few days apart in 1884 and are buried in the Old Brushy Cemetery near West Frankfort, IL. The IGI at the Mormon FHC says Nicodemus' father was Obediah, doesn't list mother. I have a copy of Obediah's death certificate. It is signed by Nero West, and all the children of his second marriage. Nero, then, must have been one of the three young sons of the first marriage. Nero named one of his son Obediah. When Van R. West was married in 1848 (at age 20), it was with the consent of O. West. Surely Obediah was his father. From census documents, Van R. West was born in IL in 1827, Nero was born in TN in 1826. Sure fits with Nicodemus being born in TN in 1824 and the fact the Obediah had 3 young sons in 1830. Where was Nicodemus born? Is Obediah his father? Is his mother Senath Smith West? Are Nero and Van his brothers? Can anybody help? Billy N. Carr
