I received this on one of my other lists and thot all of you would appreciate the message: "I WANT" I want ancestors with names like Rudimentary Montagnard or Melchizenick von Steubenhoffmannschild or Spetznatz Giafortoni, not William Brown or John Hunter or Mary Abbott. I want ancestors who could read and write, had their children baptized in recognized houses of worship, went to school, purchased land, left detailed wills (naming a huge extended family as legatees), had their photographs taken once a year -- subsequently putting said pictures in elaborate isinglass frames annotated with calligraphic inscriptions, and carved voluble and informative inscriptions in their headstones. I want relatives who managed to bury their predecessors in established, still-extant (and indexed) cemeteries. I want family members who wrote memoirs, who enlisted in the military as officers and who served in strategically important (and well documented) skirmishes. I want relatives who served as councilmen, schoolteachers, county clerks and town historians. I want relatives who `religiously' wrote in the family Bible, journaling every little event and detailing the familial relationship of every visitor. In the case of immigrant progenitors, I want them to have arrived only in those years wherein passenger lists were indexed by National Archives, and I want them to have applied for citizenship, and to have done so only in those jurisdictions which have since established indices. I want relatives who were patriotic and clubby, who joined every patrimonial society they could find, who kept diaries, and listed all their addresses, who had paintings made of their houses, and who dated every piece of paper they touched. I want forebears who were wealthy enough to afford, and to keep for generations, the tribal homestead, and who left all the aforementioned pictures and diaries and journals intact in the library. But most of all, I want relatives I can FIND!!! Penny. TX ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. The President, in the name of Congress, has awarded more than 3,400 Medals of Honor to our nation's bravest Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen since the decoration's creation in 1861. Fran, Avis, and Other Cousins, There is a great list for asking "newbie" questions. It is GenChat-L. To subscribe, send a post to GenChat-L-request@rootsweb.com Type the word SUBSCRIBE in the body of the text. The folks are great, and if they don't know the answers to your questions, they will point you in the right direction. Just remember, we were all new at this computer business once upn a time. It is really time to get back to the subject of this list, WEST family research. I hope you all have great success in finding your WEST ancestors. Myra
I suspect a few spam items do get through, although most lists I am on are filtered and/or closed. Also, many postings deal with names that are connected to the West name in some way. I have something like 2000 different surnames connected to my West family name, and I assume most of us have the same situation. If I listed just the name of "Butler", for example, without making the West connection clear, it would confuse some folks. Perhaps we could be cleared by stating at the beginning what West name we are connecting with. Joan
I agree, I have got more Junk mail today
You know, I am really glad that I belong to the Shenandoah County, VA list. People there are helpful and friendly. UNSUBSCRIBE!!!! Rick Monroe
I just noticed something very puzzling about many of the e-mails I have received. I don't know where they are coming from or how the sender got my address tosend it to me. There is nothing offensive or bothersome about the e-mails. I had assumed they were coming through the "WEST list" but they are not. They are e-mails re.any number of other surnames and all sorts of general---and sometines helpful--information. None areactually addressed to me. So, how am I getting this mail? Thanks, Flossy
And another thing: I filled out the form to obtain a nametag in order to be able to submit surnames to rootsweb. At least, I thought I filled out the form. But, I've had no response. The part about the password was confusing, not the password part, but then it asked for "password verification"----what did that mean? Thanks ahead of time, 'cause I know someone out there can help me. Flossy
Hi guys---remember I am new. On my screen where there is, what I call a "hyphen" in an address, it is wavy. The same with what I call a "back slash." Is this normal or some key or code I have no knowledge of. Thanks. Flossy
A branch of my husband's family came from Finland. I found old family papers that prove that the progenitor and his wife were both born in Scotland, went to Sweden, then to Finland and finally ended up in Wisconsin, where the family name was changed. My husband has cousins who were highly offended at the suggestion that their ancestor was anything but Finnish! We just let them believe what they want to believe. As one said, we can't pick our ancestors -- nor could they pick us! JMA
