I realize that it is listed on WFT CD's but I think we as Matthew West researchers have to be somewhat careful in pushing this as gospel. Hi gang, we are looking husband's "brick wall" of Samuel West b. bfr 1767 (place unknown) m. in 1789 , most likely NY, to a Quaker named Margaret Jenkins that was disowned by the Oblong M.M.of Dutchess Co. NY for her marriage. She was reinstated in 1798 by the Danby Vermont M.M. while she was living in Peru, NY. Our Samuel West is buying and selling land from Zepp. Platt in Clinton Co. NY. He co-owns land with a William Barber West and William owns the land ( but never lived on it) next to our Samuel in Peru, Clinton Co. NY, a Quaker community. William Barber West b. abt 1760 ( is said to have RI family ties that he visited regularly) had his children ( born -place unknown) before settling in Queensbury, Warren Co. NY (another Quaker comm.) with his wife Abigail ( thought to be a Platt). William died there in 1838. William's children are: John, Thomas, William, Mary, Abiliner, George Platt West who m. Marilla Buck dau. of David Buck & Mary Chase. William sold some of his land to David Buck in 1792. We are working on an idea that our Samuel West and William Barber West maybe coming out of the West /Soule line for they are the only West line that we have found so far that had a connection to the Barber name. Accoding to census info. William is living in the household next to a Bezaleel West/Waste in Warren Co. NY, Bezaleel b. 1772 Bolton Ct. is a West/Soule desc. Our Samuel's children are: 1. I see there are Wests who are interested in their possible Native American ancestry. I have the Oklahoma Historical Society's CD of the Dawes Rolls index. The ONLY people who are on this CD are members of the Five Civilized Tribes (Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cherokee, Creek, Seminole) who were ALSO living in what is now Oklahoma in 1900, give or take about five years. If you think your relative might fit BOTH criteria, send me a name and approximate birthdate and I'll see if they are on the Dawes Rolls. Incidentally, my Wests aren't my Native American tie. My Scotch-Irish West grandma married my Choctaw grandfather. Since we probably have new Wests on the list since the last time we discussed this (and I do think this fits under the category of genealogy), I'd like to mention the West ears. It seems the Wests have a tendency to have ears that resemble Prince Charles', both in size and shape. Proof of royal ancestry, perhaps? You can see several fine examples of West ears on my web page, http://www.theshop.net/missbev/family/Wests2.html. They have carried down even to the present generation, with my cousin's ten-year old (whose feelings I spared by NOT putting him on my West page) having those identical ears. We also have a tendency to have crooked little fingers, but I don't have a picture of those. I've decided to build a special web page in tribute to those ears. Dear Cousins, I was hoping that the few sparks that have been flying would not be fanned into a full blown flame war, but it seem to be headed that way. This list has been such a wonderful research tool, and I hate to see it go the way of so many lists that have had flame wars. I would really hate to have to unsubscribe anyone, and I am really sad at the number of people who are leaving the list because of the questions asked by a "newbie" who didn't know who to ask. So, I am asking every one to *please* refrain from sending flames to the list. If you feel that you have to send a flame, please do so privately. I would hope that you wouldn't find that necessary. Let's get back to the business of researching our most interesting family, and being kind to one another. I feel kind of responsible for all this because I tried to do something to help our research.
