Members of the Rhodes, Pitzer, Beem, and Green families, from the Westport area of Allegany Co., intermarried and made their ways to Licking County between 1800 and 1816. According to Rachel Rhodes, daughter of John and Catharine, my 2G grandmother, who married Michael Beem (Jr.), the John Rhodes moved in 1801 from Allegany Co., MD with five children to Virginia; thence in 1809 to Hog Run, Licking TWP, Licking Co., OH. In 1816 John, accompanied by daughter Rachel and son Christian, occupied property (W 1/2 of SW quarter of Sec. 14) in Jersey TWP, Licking Co., constructing a temporary shelter. Soon afterward he built a hewed house for the whole family, where John and Catharine spent the remainder of their lives. John and Catharine had 10 children: Mary, William, Elizabeth, John, Christian, Catharine, Rachel, Richard, Anna, and Anthony. John and Catharine Rhodes are buried in the Universalist Church cemetery in Jersey TWP. Seven of their children are also interred in this same cemetery. John's tombstone reads: John Rhodes Died Mar. 28, 1850 82y.2m.20d. Catharine's tombstone reads: Catharine wife of John Died Feb. 6, 1832 Aged 59y.1m.6d. John never remarried after Catharine's death. John was a veteran of the War of 1812. He was a Lieutenant in Captain Kaiser's Company, Ohio Militia, as recorded in the National Archives. Catharine Pitzer was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Pitzer. She is listed in Elizabeth's will along with her brothers and sisters. The will was made in Allegany Co., MD. Her brother Richard and family came to Licking Co., OH with Benjamin Green (my 3G grandfather) and family in 1800. Her brother Anthony Pitzer (also my 3G grandfather) and family also migrated from MD to Licking Co., OH, where he was a leading citizen of Licking TWP. I have not been able to solidly identify John Rhodes' parents. Several years ago I came to the conclusion that his parents were Jacob and Catherine Aire Rhodes. Jacob may have been the son of Rev. John Rhodes and wife Eva Albright. According to the "Jolly Family in America" by Ruth M. Jolly Van Veldhuizen (Des Moines: Postal Instant Press, 1981), this John Rhodes came from the Canton of Zurich, Switzerland, to Lancaster Co., PA in 1711 and on to Shenandoah Valley, VA in 1727. He was with seven other families including Adam Strickler, thus being one of the founders of Massanutten, the first settlement in the Shenandoah Valley. John was a Mennonite minister. Another report, which I can't identify off hand, states that Rev. John Rhodes was killed by the Indians in 1764 along with his wife Eva, four sons, and two daughters. I believe that Joseph, Jacob, and Michael Rhodes were surviving sons of Rev. John Rhodes and wife Eva. I hope that this will be helpful. I'm sorry that it doesn't solve the mystery of the multiple John Rhodes, in the early 1800s. Am always happy to hear from others searching the same families. C. 3. I was wondering why am I getting allot of surname enquiries in the West mailing list that do not pertain to the West family. I would greatly appreciate it if the people who are enquiring about for example the Rhodes family to go to the specific mailing list and not waste my time, reading your questions on people that are not related to the West family. Also not to send the same enquiry more than once. Thank-you

    2. Dale West
    3. I found this in a book titled "The History of Rehoboth, Massachusetts", Author: Leonard Bliss Jr., Call Number: F74.R3B6 BENJAMIN WEST, L. L. D., a distinguished mathematician and philosopher, was born at Rehoboth in the year 1730. His grandfather came from Great Britain, and settled in the part of Rehoboth adjoining Swansey. His father, who was a respectable farmer, removed, while Benjamin was but a boy, to Bristol, R. I. In that village he received all the education, which was not the fruit of his own unaided and persevering exertions, from the Rev. Mr. Burt. From his earliest years he discovered a remarkable fondness and aptness for mathematical studies. His pecuniary resources were very limited; and Mr. Burt, who could diseover in the expanding mind of the boy the germ of the future eminence of the man, kindly furnished him with books, and did whatever was in his power to foster his rising genius. Frowned on by fortune, but gifted by nature with powers above the ability of gold to purchase, his uncommon acquisitions were the admiration of his contemporaries, and secured to him a reputation, which few, with no greater advantages, have ever attained. The mathematics, in their several departments, were his favorite study, though he made respectable, and even extensive, acquisitions in general knowledge. About the year 1753, he removed to Providence, where he opened a school. This, however, after some time, he relinquished; and, from an expectation of improving his pecuniary circumstances, engaged in mercantile pursuits. While in this occupation, he opened the first book-store in Providence. He continued in this business till the commencement of the Revolutionary war, when, in consequence of the embarrassment of his affairs, he was obliged to relinquish commercial business entirely, and seek some other employment for the support of his family. During the war Mr. West was a zealous patriot; and, Providence being a depot for military stores and supplies for the American army, he was engaged in manufacturing clothing for our troops till very near the close of the war. During all this time, however, he found some leisure for study, and applied himself to his favorite pursuit with an unyielding energy. About the year 1763, he commenced the publication of an almanac, the astronomical calculations designed for the meridian of Providence; and continued to publish it annually till about 1793. In, or about, the year 1766, he calculated an almanac for the meridian of Halifax, (Nova-Scotia); and continued to furnish annually the copy of an almanac calculated for that meridian, until near the close of his life in 1813, with the exception of a short period during the Revolutionary war. As early as 1766, he made some very accurate observations upon a comet that appeared that year, which he communicated to Professor Winthrop of Cambridge. The transit of Venus, which occurred on the 3d of June, 1769, and that of Mercury, which happened in November following, afforded him a favorable opportunity of establishing a more extended and permanent reputation, as a mathematician and astronomer. He published a tract on the transits of these planets; and also furnished a communication respecting them to the Royal Society of London. The reputation which he had by this time acquired led him to a correspondence with some of the most distinguished scientific men in the country, on various mathematical and astronomical subjects. In 1770 he received the honorary degree of Master of Arts from Harvard University. In 1770 he was unanimously elected a member of the American Academy of A?? Seiences, and received their diploma. He was also made an honorary member of the American Philosophical Society at Philadelphia. Soon after the close of the Revolutionary war, he resumed the business of teaching a school, and continued in this employment till 1786, when he was elected Professor of Mathematics and Astronomy in Brown University; but did not enter upon the actual discharge of the duties of his professorship, until 1788. During this interval, he officiated as Professor of Mathematics, in the Protestant Episcopal Academy at Philadelphia. Whilst here he enjoyed the society and friendship of the distinguished scientific men of that city; and among the number were Franklin and Rittenhouse. In 1788, he entered upon the duties of his professorship at Providence; and at the commencement, in 1792, the degree of Doctor of Laws was conferred upon him for his distinguished services in the cause of science. The duties of his professorship he continued to discharge, with equal credit to himself and advantage to the institution, till the year 1799, when he retired from a situation to which he had imparted honor. In 1802, Mr. West was appointed Post-master at Providence, which situation he filled till his death, that occurred August 13, 1813, in the 83d year of his age. Besides his observations on the transits of the planets, Mercury and Venus, Mr. West furnished several articles, which are to be found in the memoirs of the literary societies with which he was connected. He also left behind him many writings which he contemplated issuing from the press. He collected, with much expense, a library, containing many rare and valuable works in the several departments of science, to which he was passionately attached. His wife was Elizabeth Smith, daughter of Benjamin Smith of Bristol, R. I. He left one son and three daughters.--[Alden's Collection of Am. Epitaphs and Inscriptions, Vol. IV. p. 85, No. 689. Samuel White's parents had died while he was a small child, and he had been brought up by his grand-uncle, Josiah White. He had two brothers, John and Benjamin, and a half brother, named Enos West. Enos West, when a man, lived for a time in Providence, R. I., removed later to New Orleans, where he was murdered by pirates. Samuel White and Susannah (Hamilton) White had twelve children, of whom one or two, at least, were born in Brookfield. Some were born in Calais, Vt., and I think some must have been born in New Hampshire, while the family were practically en route for Vermont, as I have heard that they came in company with William Templeton from New Hampshire, and I know that Polly, Samuel's oldest daughter, married Templeton. -- Dale West e-mail: dwest@banet.net Visit West Family Genealogy http://www.westfamilygenealogy.com

    3. Over the past month I have been moving the "West Family Genealogy" web site off of GeoCities and on to my own server. The transition is complete and the new address is: http://www.westfamilygenealogy.com. The transition is now complete and now I can get back to genealogy. The old URL has a splash page to redirect visitors to the new page but will only work for 30 days. If you have a bookmark or link on any of your web sites please update it. I have tested and re-tested the site and believe it is in good working order, if you find and bugs or bad links please notify me. I will update all my surname databases next week. -- Dale West e-mail: dwest@gsbgrafx.com Visit West Family Genealogy http://www.westfamilygenealogy.com

    2. JAMES G. BLACK
    3. I believe this James West may be on the Walton Co. Ga Census in 1820. His son Wade Hampton West was born in 1818 in Ga. This James West household has the right amount of children with the right ages and the parents are in the right age group. Certainly not any proof. But it was the only James West that fit that criteria. By 1830 this family is gone from Ga. and I believe that they have moved on to Ark. The oldest daughter has married a McInvail(or some variation of) in Ga.? going by the age of her little girl Emily. The widowed Harrett McInvail marries the widower Peter Tumlinson either in Ark or TX. His family is living in Ark and hers has moved on to Tx. I do not know what was included in Walton Co. in 1820. Hope that helps, Jean Black
