    1. [WEST-L] WEST family of wester PA
    2. Ralph West
    3. I am researching the WEST, WHITAKER, MCCOMAS, LOWERY and HAYS families who settled in western Pennsylvania before 1800. The following is a summary of information that is known: Mary Lowery, b. May 21, 1761, dau. of, Col. Alexander Lowery and Mary Waters, married 1st John (or Matthew) Hay and moved to western PA, after the Rev war, they had two sons; Lowery and John. (the sons later moved to Shawneetown, IL) John Hay drown leaving Mary a widow. My GGG/GdFather Joseph West, Sr., b. 1757, d. Mar. 19, 1841, in Allegheny Co., PA, married 1st the widow Mary (Lowery) Hays about 1789, they had four sons; Alexander, Edward, Joseph b. 1795 and Matthew b. 1799. Mary died between 1799 and 1812. Joseph Sr. married 2nd my GGG/GdMother Catherine Whitaker, b. ?1788, dau. of Aaron Whitaker and Martha Ann Roush. Joseph and Catherine's 1st son, Aaron Whitaker West, b. 1813, is my GG/GdFather. In 1796 Col. Lowery sold his 300 acre Rev War land patent, named Leydon, located on the Monongahela River about 9 miles up river from Pittsburgh, to Joseph West and his daughter Mary (Lowery)(Hays) West. In 1871 the West heirs would sell the farm and it would become Homestead, PA. I have located information in regard to the ancestors of Joseph West Sr. in several biographical history books about western PA, I have no proof to backup the bios. The bios. list Joseph's parents as Edward West and Elizabeth McComas who settled in Washington, Co., PA on a warrant named "Election Ground". I have a DAR application that lists Edward West b. June 16, 1729 in Loudoun Co., VA, d. Jun. 14, 1812, in Washington, Co., PA. He married Elizabeth McComas 1769. She was b. Jan. 2, 1731, d. May 26, 1813. They are buried in "Old West" cemetery, in Washington Co., PA. There is no Joseph West listed as a son of Edward on the DAR application. Elizabeth may be Edwards second wife since they married (1769) after Joseph was born (1757). If any one has any info I will share all that I have. 3. Hi list, I'm looking for a John W. West from Pennsylvania..mid 1800's. I believe that somehow he is from my line. In 1855 in Centre County PA he bought a piece of property with Hugh St. Clair West. I have a copy of the deed, but no information on the John W. West listed. I'm trying to determine if he is a brother, father or uncle of Hugh, as Hugh is from my line. Is anyone familiar with this line? Thanks very much. Dawn West

    3. Dennis Thanks for your reply. I had emailed Myra last week on this subject, but didn't get a reply, so that's why I posted on the West site. I descend from John Wm.'s twin sister Martha Ellen West. I really don't know of any male West descendants of this family. Good luck, and again thanks Joe _________________________________________________________________ Surf and talk on the phone at the same time with broadband Internet access. 3. How safe is laminating?? I understand lamination will , in time, darken the item until one cannot read/see it anymore. I have obituaries, laminated in the mid 1970's that cannot be copied now, they are so dark and not readable. 2. Vicki, How about offering to sell it to someone on the list for what it cost you. I am sure you will get an offer. From what I understand, a lot of people sell pages from old books on ebay and other places. It doesn't take away from the fact that it came from a 1860's book. Ask the seller for more information if you can and just offer to sell it. Lisa

    3. Hi Jo, I found a Nicholas West born in 1501 in Long Crendon, Bucks, England and married to an Isabel - in about 1524. I have their two children listed as William and Thomas. Thomas was born in about 1530 - and that is all the info I was able to gather. Their other son William was kin - way back. I have that he had 6 children - William, Nicholas, Hugh, rowland, Agnes and Margery. I don't have a birth date for Nicholas. My line continues through William's son - William. Hope this helps. Fabel Lee Titus <[email protected]> wrote: Bill, I have Thomas West, born 1642, married to Ann Rachel Gilpin 3 Feb 1682. She was born 14 Feb 1660. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. I am still looking for info on Nicholas West, he would be an ancestor to Thomas West. He was born about 1500 in Long Credon, Bucks, England. Married to Isabell about 1524. I have his father as Richard West. I will keep looking for an Edward. If you can find any more info on any of these persons mentioned above would really appreciate it. 3. Hi Jim, My West line does go back into Pennsylvania - a Joseph West & Jane Owens - the only child I know of theirs was their son Isaac (Sr) who was born in PA in 1741 and died in Montgomery Co., VA in 1821. He was married to Rosanna Lewis in 1766 in Randolph County, NC Joseph Was born Jan 6 1717 or 1718 in Springfield, Deleware, PA and died Sept 12, 1802 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. He was designated as a Patriot in the Revolutionary War. Jane was born Jun 9 1720 in Nottingham, Chester Co., PA and died 20 Dec 1791. How does all this fit? According to history, Frederick County was populated by protestants imported from Penn. So I think William's family came from Penn. Later William and at least two children, Jacob and Joshua Wesley, moved to Ohio. Could your West's be related to my West's?? 3. From what I have briefly read here, whether they "meant well" or not is beside the point. It appears on the surface that they mis-identified the material. You can, and should, seek redress (that is, your money back! - upon return of the page, of course). If they advertised an original etching, then an original etching is what they must produce -- not a ripped out page of a book. I buy and sell on ebay often -- I must advertise exactly, and I expect what I buy must be as advertised. Otherwise the sale is not proper. 3. Websters dictionary: "Engraving: An impression from an engraved plate, block of wood, or other material; a print." I understood from reading the auction that that is what this is...a very small print from the engravers block. Usually they are inserted into the page, and can be removed. If that is what you got then the seller did not misrepresent. If this isn't what you received, you should let the seller know. I would be very careful in leaving bad "feedback" for the seller...it goes on their record permanently and is a black mark. I know this as an eBay seller. > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Fabel Konicke > Sent: Thursday, October 16, 2003 10:22 PM > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [WEST-L] BENJAMIN WEST > > I actually purchased this item - so will let you know how it works out!

    2. Hi Vicki, Well I agree that it didn't sound real clear but I also remember that the bidding was fairly low on it as well. You can rate the seller negatively if you feel that it was misrepresented but I remember seeing the picture and it looked pretty clear. I would just do something creative with it, frame it and enjoy it. Maybe even putting several pictures together showing how the house has evolved over the last 150 years. We are cousins and we are lucky that such a piece of our history still exists.
